Show HINTS A30UT COWS. THE nANGER OF FOUC1XG DAIRY COWS. President P.ircell of the Union county (N. J. ) Farmers' club, thinks that cows kept fat and fed high in order to loree them to give large quantities of milk prematurely wear out and are subject to attacks of milk lever, abortion, garget, sterility and sudden death. He has lost four or five in this way within a few years. MAKING A COW GIVE TOWN. To persuade a cow to give down her milk against her will is a difficult and sometimes a hopeless task. A plan that has been highly spoken of ia lo lay a heavy chain across her back while milking her. It is very certain that harshness and impatience will only make matters worse, and that kindness and petting will have the best effect. The use of milking tubes might be effective. A poor cow, free lrom this vice, ia belter than the best cow alllicted with it. AttTIFICLL DRYING CP OF A MILCH COW. I was called upon for advice a short tirut ago in regard to a valuable cow which hud been well fed and had given a large quantity of milk. The owner, thinking she ought to have a rest before. she calved, attempted to dry her ofi two months before she dropped her calf. She was then giving giv-ing about six quarts of milk per day. He took away her roots and grain and began milking her once a day. Had reduced the amount of milk one half, when her milk began to get ropy and thick, and the udder wbb swollen and caked. I advised washing wash-ing it efl with blood-warm water, giving a dose of salts and saltpetre, raturuing to the feed of roots aud shorts and milking twice a day. For that cow, with the keeping and care that she has had, it is more natural to continue in milk than to cease from it, and I believe more damage is done every year by trying to dry up cows that are natural milkers than there iB by milking too long. I do not care it a cow does not go dry one day before calving, if she will not without my taking paius to dry her off. I expect to hear lrom thii case again, and may learn how it came out.
