Show Crossing the Danube. The Danube was successfully crossed without great resistance at Simnitzi and Sistova, but at other points on the river great resistance was encountered en-countered from the Turks and terrible losses are reported. The losses by the movement at Simnitza and Sistova are reported at not over 1,000 lives. Tbe attempt to cross near Turna Moragelli failed, a terrible ter-rible battle having taken place, and it is thought other divisions will be forced to cross at Simnitza. It is re ported that 50,000 Russians had crossed the river and obtained a foot i im in Bulgaria, dividing the Turkish army. At Sistova the Turks were driven back from the landing place at the point of the bayonet. The iurltisn mlantry, some d.OOO m number, num-ber, made an attack on tho troops which had landed, but were repulsed by the musketry of the brigade, which soon afterwards occupied the heiguts. The Roumanians are preparing to cross near Widdiu. There are 30,-000 30,-000 infantry and 15,000 Cmackj in the Dobrudscha. lierzova was evacuated on the advance ad-vance of the Russians. Severe fighting fight-ing is reported at Chernovjula. At Nickopolis and Sistuva on Wednesday losses on both sides were appalling. The Russians have occupied the island of Barcea near Silistria. |
