Show PROVO ITEMS. (From our Special Reporter.) TRAIN LAI E, On Wednesday morning lust the Utah Southern train was upwards of an hour late on its arrival at Provo. This was ao unusual with this train tbat Borne little anxiety was felt about its safety, but at last it put in its appearance ap-pearance and all were relieved. It appeared, upon iuquiry, that the gravel train got off the track at tbe point of the mountain, and thus interfered in-terfered with the progress of the passenger pas-senger train south. Tbe time occu-piod occu-piod in getting the gravel train on tbe track was tbe cause of tbe delay. UPBKT. Our men and animals generally are so staid in their conduct that we are hardly ever excited with a runaway, an accident or a fin lit. This week, however, our Bteady old hack, tbat everybody knows at tbe railroad, had a fresh team, and Jehu, wanting to show off the fine metal ot the quadrupeds, quadru-peds, made them "speel" along at less than a 2.40 speed. Coming to a narrow nar-row place called a bridge tbat spanned a watercourse, they shied, and tbe wheels passing over the edge cup-sized cup-sized the vehicle into the water. Tbe only passenger inside, a man who weighed about 220 pounds, was soused into the stream and receivtd a baptism tbat could Dot be considered canonical, as there was no priest officiating. After getting saturated through (tbat ia, bis clothes,) he made no small wicket gate out of the slough of dtfspond by thw back way of the back of the carriage. W lib that exception all was without injury. OUR LADY rftOFESSOH. At the opening of the present term of the B. Y. academy it was hoped tbat classes in music, drawing and fancy needlework would ba formed, and Mrs. Dr. Ferguson, a lady of fine education and rare accomplishments, w.ib partially engaged to take charge of loose classes, but in consequence of uncontrollable drawbacks, tbe arrangements ar-rangements could not be effected. We were sorry tu learn tbat tbe pupils were disappointed, and the institution deprived of tbe services of ao eminent , an instruotresi, which we conceive is I a loss to the county. vVe learn, how- ever, tbat Mrs. Ferguson is engaged j im take charge of classes in those tiiriifR in lha branch nf thm Dorpi-M university held in the Social hall, which is under the superintendence of Miss Cook. We regret tbe loss lo Provo and Utah county by tbe engagement en-gagement of Mrs. Ferguson, and can only feel proud, by way of compensation, compensa-tion, that Provo furnishes other institutions in-stitutions with efficient teachers. "UNDER OSS FLAG." Many ot our citizens, here and throughout tbe couoty, are interested inter-ested in the reappearance of Mr. J. S. Lindsay's play, "Under One Flag," and they hope to have the opportunity to see it acted in your theatre during conference days. We want to patronize borne talent and home products, in -mind as well as material things. It will be a great disappointment to many if it is not put on the boards again. ARRRKTS- The city of Provo is a sober burgh, and the city dads have prohibited tbe s 'lie of all kinds of intoxicating liquors, even to a "dropo' beer," but everybody not seeing alike in this prohibitory measure, two citizens undertook un-dertook to furnish the thirsty with a "drop on the sly." It is reperted that for some months past liquor of a hard kind could be bad at certain pi .tee, and the illicit dispensers were said tu be doing a good trade of it, Tueir success made them bold and incautious, incau-tious, and they brought themselves to a standstill, as such law-breakers do, by selling to one or two too many, who informed on them. On Wednes day night, however, a deputy United States marshal entered the premises of Fred. Irving, the barber, and Thomas Hindmarsh, the basket maker, and having some evidences of their guilt arrested them for selling spirituous liquors without license. An indictment waa lound against them, and on being arraigned in court the parties plead guilty. THE COURT. The business of the First judicial district court is being rushed through by Judge Emerson. The legal fraternity fra-ternity is well represented, and the place is alive with judges, lawyers, jurymen, witnesses and clients. We will let Judge Emerson ofl to assist in your district, as he is needtd among you to dispense justice evenly. Corses. |
