Show The Compromise. The settlement by compromise of the Buits of Kate Flint and Cora Conway Con-way against the city officers, appears to be pretty generally approved by citizens. citi-zens. It seems like a pretty hard debt to pay, but thinking people realize that sooner or later the corporation would have to settle with the plaintiff by paying them a reasonable price for ihe property destroyed. The histories his-tories of the two suits are identical. The plaintifls Kate Flint and Cora Conway were notorious prostitutes, prosti-tutes, who had been arrested and fined on numerous occasions for plying their illegal vocation in the city. This mode of punishment punish-ment had no effect upon them, for they kept their houses of ill fame open without shame, setting the corporation cor-poration authorities and the laws at defiance. Fiually complaint was made against their establishments as nuisances, and at the trial they were so adjudged, and were ordered to be abated. Tbe order of the court was complied with, and the abatement made complete by the demolition and destruction of the furniture found in the bouses. It was hoped that this would put a check upon the prosti lutes, and probably cause them to leave town. The result was in a measure as desired, but Flint and Cora Conway brought suit against the destroyers ot their property, prop-erty, the combined sum of damages claimed being somewhere in the neighborhood of Si0,000. The suits were instituted shortly alter the breaking occurred in 1S72, and bave taken a good deal of lime and at: em tention in the courts duriDg the five years that have since elapsed. After two or three trials the plaintiffs obtained ob-tained verdicts amounting to about $11,000, which bave now been compromised com-promised and settled (or $6,000, plaintifld paying costs. On the whole we think the mryor end couucil have acted wisely in the matter. Tbe suits had been expensive from the beginning, begin-ning, and were likely to continue a heavy tax until their settlement, with the prospect in tbe end ol paying more than the Bum now given. Tbe sum paid IB probably a fair price for the property destroyed. |
