Treasury officials say that neither Collector Arthur nor Naval Officer Cornell has forwarded his resignation as requested on the day following the decision of the cabinet cabi-net to make a change in the three principal offices in New York. Collector Col-lector Arthur had previously indicated to Secretary Sherman that his resignation resig-nation could be had at any time. It is believed at the department that Arthur and Cornell will not resign. Assistant Secretary McCormick will not retire on the 4th of October as intended, in-tended, but will remain a little longer at the request Ol oecretary ora iuu and the president. The latter desireB McCormick to remain through the extra session of congress, but, this he will probably not do. Some ot Secretary Sherman s friends assert positively that in the event of the republicans obtaining a majority in the Ohio legislature, be will be a candidate for election to the senate. , Secretary Sherman emphatically and indignantly denies a report which has been circulated that he has approved ap-proved a paper obliging Ohio clerks in the treasury department to go home and vote at the coming election. |
