Show ANOTHER INDUSTRY. Z. C. M. I. Making; Overalls by ibe Wholesale. New industries seem to be the order of the day. Ono of the praiseworthy features of many of tbe enterprises commenced here is that they are placed upon a eolid footing before the public is generally made acquainted with their existence. This happens to be tbe case with toward to a new industry which has been fostered and put upon a thorough and paying ! basis by Z. C. M. I , while yet Ibe great public is ignorant of tbe fact that the industry has ever been started. For some lime past this institution has been making overalls, hut on a very small scale until last June. About that time Mr. A. L. Brinton, of Philadelphia, a gentleman thoroughly skilled in tbe moat improved im-proved method of cuttiug and manufacturing manu-facturing overalls, and baving twenty years' experience, came here and was employed by Z O. M. I., and be immediately instituted a new order of things. "Heretoore the outting bad been done by band shears, and only az to eight thicknesses could be cut at a time. However, Mr. Brinton started hy cutiiDg from thirty to fifty thicknesses at a time, and was furnished with tools aud implements im-plements whereby be could lay out as many as 100 dozen pairs of overalls at once Tbe vaet saving thus made, the greater amount of goods that oould be turned out in a given period by the same labor, aud the much lower price at which suits could be furnished, at once commended the idea to General H. S. Eldredge, superintendent super-intendent of Z. C. M. I., as one that would justify an increase in the manufacture. man-ufacture. The goods were immediately immedi-ately placed upon the market, aud as a comparison showed that they were made of better material, the workmanship work-manship and cutting was much nearer and the price was lower than (be imported article, a local wholesale demand immediately started and has been increasing ever since. Mr. Spencer Clawaon, who has the management of this department, states that there are now constantly employed by the ocuperative Institution Institu-tion in this business, all of sixty persons. per-sons. The room in which the factory is situated is 30x60, and is so far from furnishing the necessary accommoda tion, that tbe greater part of the work has to be let out and taken away to be done; but an soon as the new ad-, dition to tbe Ccop. is completed such ohanges are to be made in the departments de-partments that the factory will be removed re-moved to one of tha upper floors of the main building, when, with increased in-creased room, inoreaaed work will be turned out. One of the principal advantages of the overalls made by Z. O. M. I, over eastern goods is that here they are cut like pants and ore used as such, while in tbe east they are used only over other clothing, and have not the shape. Besides, tbe material used lining, buttons, etc and the workmanship Is generally superior, as can readily be determined upon examination. There are different grades of goods, which, of course, are furnished at different figures. On the beat grade a patent metallio button words "Z. O. M. I., Salt Lake City." ; Biuce May last there have been! made and Bold 1,130 dozen overalls and jumpers, the value of which, at wholesale figures, aggregates aggre-gates some $12,500. Hereafter the winter goods will be manufactured in summer, and tbe conclusion is a natural one that in a very short time, the importation of overalls will oeaBe altogether. In addition to this, and in the eame department, the manulaoture of suits ol flannel underwear haB been commenced com-menced and is already a success. The Uannel used ia of home make, which is known to be equal to eastern manufacture, man-ufacture, and tbe workmanship is in many particulars muoh superior. Tbey also manufacture overehirts whiob oomparenot only in material and work with thB imported goods, but Bell at a lower figure; besides, the boxes and everylhing else is of home production. Mr. Clawaon eaya it is tbe intention to develop this new industry into other branches as tbe demand will justify, and it is safe to prediot that before long a large and important industry, giving employment to many, will bej one of the prominent features of Zion'Bj Cooperative Mercantile Institution, i r i |
