Show It was announced in a Washington Washing-ton dispatch recently that President 'Grant had determined to removo all postmasters and other federal officials in Utah who are Mormons, whether polygamists or not; and late accounts from that territory represent him as being vigorously engaged in the work. This leads a Mormon newspaper news-paper to ask if the president is aware of the fact that the sixth article of the constitution provides that no religious reli-gious test shall ever be required as a qualification lo any office under the United Suites ? It lias been currently reported that Grant once said that he never read any books; aud there are many circumstances calculated to induce in-duce tho belief that he has never made a study of the constitution. But even il he had the provisions of that instrument at his tongue's .end, his religiouB convictions, as exemplified in his beautiful life, are so strong that he would hardly permit any constitutional constitu-tional provision to hinder him from the exercise of any authority which could tend to the extirpation of what he regards as a dangerous heresy. The deep interest which he takes m the spiritual welfare of the people, and especially of the Indians, is truly impressive. New York Sun. |
