While the presidential reception was going on at the Walker House, a party of gentlemen gen-tlemen were talking on the street, when they wero approached by an ex-soldier who had served with Grant before the latter was general. One jofthe party addressing the veteran said: "Well, Mr. , you ought to go down and shako hands with tho president." "H 1," replied the veteran, "I'm not going to make any fuss over' Grant; I've shaken his hand many, times when we both wore blouses." ' "Y'es, without the b,"said the wag, and they all took a "straight." |
