Tiie spirit actu ating the speakers who had lately addressed tiie meetings among tlie people had urged them to preach repeuUnee of fol.y and strict obedience obed-ience to principles of godliness, lfu prayed for the inspiration of heaven to rest Uon those who should follow I him in addressing the conference. I Eider Jos. i'. Smith then said that it was a pleasure for him to address ad-dress the saints when he could enjoy the Holy Giiust, and telt thankful thank-ful tor the many happv ex periences which had been realized re-alized by the saiutd in Utah. lkth ancient and modern prophets had announced that the gospel should be preached to all nations, and that j every son of Adam would have the prWilege of hearing it and being saved by its power, il they desired to 1 receive it, and the bitterness existing at the present time against those who embraced it was just as acute and virulent as that manifested against the people of God in any previous age, but there was no enemy en-emy so much 10 be dreaded as the, secret influences which sought to de-i stroy the inward faith and to corrupt tiie heart of man-. There was, consequently con-sequently a. necessity to study the inner motive ol tlie heart, to see it anv evil it ll ience were insinuating: I itself and producing corruption or inti lelity to tiie principles of the gospel ol Cnriot. He dwelt on apostacy, and stated that the severe doctrine preached on the sin against tho Holy Ghost was I not 01 iginal with the prophets I Joseph Smith or Brigham Young, but was strongly urged by the Lord Jesus Christ. President Yoi'.sa said the conference confer-ence would be adjourned to 2 o'clock in the afternoon. Choir sang the anthem "Open Thou mine eyee," 6cc. Benediction by Bishop L. D. Young. 2 r.si. Choir sang "Groat God attend while Zion Sings," etc. Prayer by Elder B. Y'oung, jr. Singing "All Hail the Glorious Day," etc. Elder F. M. Lyman addressed the conference. He was pleased to be at home with the Saints and where God had ordained that his people should gather, and he desired to devote his time, talents and ability in building up tho kingdom of God. Il was nut only necessary to teach I the principles of the gospel, but also to practice them so as to show mankind man-kind that they were calculated to improve im-prove thoso who believe them, for although reasoning miht have an iu-tluence iu-tluence with the children of men, still they could not deny the good works of a rig hit oils people when they caw them. It is necessary to be willing t part with everything for the kingdom king-dom of God. Every one should commence, com-mence, individually, to crucify the evil passions and lusts in his own euul in onicr to bring about that union which was se desirable. Tlie greatest trouble which the Saints Wuii Id liavo to sufler would originate in their own hearts and the hearts of their brethren. Kvery man, u he wouid be saved for himself, musl also reform for himself, and relormatiim was therelore au individual in-dividual matter. This had been a IdcMcd land to the -ainL, and it would be tor many years to come, ift:.ey served G.,d faithfully. Clouds might gather, but the sun ot prosperity would shine again in the Lord's due time. |
