Ryan, formerly au officer iu the Confederate army, during tho rebellion in this country, and afterwards a well-known miner in Montana, tenders his services ser-vices to Don Carlos Cespedcs, President Presi-dent of the Cuban Liberators, liyan ia placed in command of a small but daring baud of Liberators. Rvan acts as a bpy, enters the lines of the Spanish General Yahuaaoka, makes important discoverics.duriDg which he has some hair-brcadtli escapes. Ho iR bcthrothed to Ehuna, orphan daughter of jDon Francisco Salaza. She renders timely aid to liyan and the Liberating army. After a severe engagement between the Spanish and , Liberal troops, the latter are defeated, and the ringleaders, among whom are Ryan and Cespedes, aro taken prisoners and ordered to be shot. The execution takes place with urcat military pomp and display in a public pub-lic plaza. Elzina enters the plaza in ijreat haste as thu word "J''ixo" is given, and heedless of the command rushes up to Ryan and receives a mortal wound at the same time as her lover; thus sacrificing her life at the shrino of Btiong affection and devotion, |
