Show DAVID LIVINGSTONE ADAM BLACK. The telegraph brings us, in one day, word of tho death of two illustrious Scotchmen the Rev. David Livingstone, Living-stone, world-famed as an African explorer; ex-plorer; and Adam Black, the eminent publisher, whose reputation as a broad-minded reformer baa passe 1 far beyond national bounds. Dr. Livingstone was born at Blan-tyre, Blan-tyre, on the banks of the Clyde, near Glasgow, in 1S17, and would consequently conse-quently be in his fifty-seventh year when he died. For thirty-! hrec years his life has been devoted to Africa, he having gone to Port Natal in ISiO, ehortly after hia ordination. To sketch in the briefest manner his subsequent travels and labors in that continent, would require a volume; 'and though ho published in 1S37 "Travels and Researches in South Africa," and in '65 his "Expedition to the Zambesi and its Tributaries," his death will bo a loss to the world of scipnee almost irreparable. No doubt he made valuable val-uable notes of hU later and less-known less-known explorations, but his own experience, ex-perience, tho aid of his memory, and many incidents necessary to render them lucid, will now be wanting. As an indefatigable worker in his chosen field, a man of wonderful endurance and Etlf-sacrificing spirit, and a devoted dev-oted servant of science. he will deservedly deserv-edly occupy a prominent niche among tho world's greatest men. Adam Black was born in 1751, and was, therefore, nearly ninety years of ago. Among his earlier works which he brought out was the "Encyclopedia "Encyclope-dia Britannica," to which he has been a valuable contributor. Intimately Intim-ately acquainted with Sir Walter Scott, he rejoiced in tho great novel-iit'B novel-iit'B successes, and sympathized in his reverses. Black held many municipal munici-pal offices in Edinburgh, was twice elected Lord Provost, refused the honor of-knighthood, and was elected elect-ed lo the British parliament, when over seventy years of age, serving nine years, from 18.56 to 18' Jo. |
