Show JEFF. DAVIS ON H. S. FOOTE. Chicago, 26. The criticisms of ex-Oovcruor ex-Oovcruor Henry S. Foote, of Missis' sippi, on Jellertion Davis, continue to be quite annoying. A friend of the latter wrote tohitn, cal ing his attention atten-tion to the matter'. Davis made tho following reply, which is now given to the public through the Timei: Memphis, Tenn., Nov. 21, 1S73. Dear Sir: Yours ol the 20lh has been received this day. I have not seen any of the articles which you in-! form me Mr. H. S. Foote has written in abuse of mc, nor have I any desire to read what he might write. In tho year of 1S71 I published him as constitutionally con-stitutionally a liar, and his subsequent career only Beryed to confirm me in that judgment. Since that date, therefore, I have taken no heed of the utterances of said Foote. His -lattery, when he was seeking political preferment prefer-ment in the Confederacy, and his abus'i when faithlcs to his trust as represent alive in Congress of the Confederate Suites, when he was pro-paring pro-paring for bis subsequent desertiou to their enemies, were alike disregarded by me. You are at liberty to use this a-s you Ih'nk proper. I remain, Kcspcctfully and truly. Yours, Ji:t i o;.-:o.NT Dayw, |
