Wilson, and which was cashed by ono of the banks here. Washincton, D. (, 11. At the opening of the session of tbe Poland committee, Vice President Colfax and judgo Hale, his counsel, appeared promptly. Ames was not on hand. Hale, in reply to a question of Polam 9 said it would be unjust to Colfax tu place him on the stand, until Ames had completed his testimony against him. Ames thonly arrived, but in reply to a question from the chairman of the committee, said he had left his memorandum book and other documents, docu-ments, copies of which he had produced pro-duced in the first examination, with a friend, and added that he was told that ho, Ames, ought to hear the testimony testi-mony designed to impeach him before he produced his book. Poland said the committee thought it ought to be produced at once, and a messenger was sent for i'. .Meantime Ames produced pro-duced a memorandum showing that senator Patterson paid for his thirty shares August 3 1st, 1867, instead of in December 1S07 as Ames at first testified, A recess was then taken. Alter recess Horace F. Clark appeared ap-peared beforo t'.o committee and, in behalf of Ames, declined to produce the memorandum book. Ho thought tho committee shouldn't look into the private affairs of Amcp. He, however, allowed a comparison of entries in the book with tho testimony of Amc?. The entries wero then read, showing payments to Heniy Wilton, and to L'awep. Chicago, 1 1. A Washington special says it is known that Oakes Ames has tailed to find the receipt signed by Colfax for the twelve hundred dollar check and that he probably has no letter let-ter from Colfax on the subject. Colfax's friends say he is ready to prove that he received the $l,2i0 deposited by him in the bank from another person than Amcr. The same spccicl says it is a teoeral belief that the investigating committee, whatever else they may do, have already decided to recommend the expulsion of Ames and Brooke. |
