Show ANOTHER ANNEXATION I SCHEME. The death of ibe late dusky monarch who rciiinod over the Hawaiian islands, I Kins Kiiujeliamcha V, formerly Prince Lit, lias Riven cauc lor the revival of a project, routed eonio years ao, for i the annexation hy tho United Slates i of tho Sandwich. Islands. According ( to a di.-palch received ycytcrduy, go vernor McCook, of Colorado, who was - formerly America 1 iiiinistcr at Honolulu, Hono-lulu, considers thin tho tnojicr lituc, as tho Knjdish and French arc napping, their ministers bcitiR absent from the Hawaiian capital, and no war vessels being )Q Hawaiian waters except American. McCook is known to be what is called a "sharp fellow" emphatically em-phatically so; in fact it ia said the people of Denver consider him so "sharp" that they are anxioua hia great abilities should be diverted to some other oormuuoUy that hasn't yet been blessed with them. And so, with an eye to tho main chance, he is inclined in-clined to think that now, with the throne- vacant, no French or English minister present to interfere with matters, mat-ters, ami American oannon convenient to give w.ight to American plans, the United States should probably by a coup tic Hum-annex the sixty thousand thou-sand Kanaka?, the lovely islands which they inhabit, with Manna Loa, byway of a bonfire, to shud a halo over the act. I The proposition, as it is telegraphed, is not a very honorable- ono, but probably pro-bably it was as much so as MoCook's ideas of honor and honesty would be likely to produce. Tho annexation annexa-tion of tho Hawaiian jlslands would le a desirable act for the United 1 States, and certainly would benefit the natives, wiio are now called on to keep up a monarchial government, with a full civil list, at an oxpenso which must press heavily upon them. The independence inde-pendence of tho Iilands, under the reign of tho dynasty of which Kame-hauieha Kame-hauieha V. was a member, was guaranteed guar-anteed by tho United Stales, France and England; but how far that obligation obliga-tion may be binding, now that tho throne is vacmt, we are not prepared to say. Should tho idea of annexation be seriously entertained by our government, gov-ernment, and acceded to by the European Euro-pean powers named, a Territorial form of government, so far as taxation is oonoerued, would be-an improvement for tho natives ; always excepting tho possibility of a set of thieving thiev-ing rascals securing appointments to othee and robbing them by wholesale. But it is possible that France and England might oppose annexation, when tho question would arise whether it would be worth while to get up serious complications with those powers, and probably war, for t. tho sake of the Sandwich Islands. And beyond all question, if tho United i States should play any snap game such as that proposed by McCook, there would arise complications, io which we would have to meet the onus of seeking seek-ing an increase of territorial area by ; : dishonorable means. It is barely pro- bable that the matter may be seriously entertained by our government, and that a plebiscite on the Islands would result in an overwhelming majority io favor of tho project, if tho job was 1 1 properly manipulated; but it is more likely that nothing will be done in the 1 matter at present. |
