'11k. outer wall is of blocks of cut stone, while on the inside W a wall of rough stone laid in mortar, The men, twelve iu number, dug through the inside wall, removed the moi'Lir, by means of a wire, from around one of the tut blocks, which they were endeavoring to remove, when discovered. The guard listened to the men working for some time, when they put a stop lo it by removing remov-ing the prisoners to other cells.., The damage done to the jail amounts to little, and can be repaired in a short time. There are said to be some hard characters among the prisoners in the county jail, and now that most of them have been indicted, with a speedy trial before them, and doubtless doubt-less conviction, and a term of service in the penitentiary certain to some of them, they are willing to take desperate desper-ate chances to make their escape. A 1 strong guard is kept at the jail night I and day, and there is little fear that tJiey will accomplish their design. |
