Show SHARPE RIFLES -AND INDIAN TRADERS. TRA-DERS. The War Department b:is received continuation of the Indian attack upon up-on a portion of the Yellowstone expedition, ex-pedition, the published account of which was telegraphed from Fort .Benton by a New York Trihunv correspondent. cor-respondent. That correspondent also al-so reported that the Indians were armed with ritles, ami had nn abundant abund-ant supply of ammunition. They were dressed in clothes procured at agencies, and were under command of the notorious Sitting Bull. Their Mipplics are said to have been received re-ceived at Fort l'eek on the Missouri river, about a hundred and twenty miles aKive the junction of the Yel-j Yel-j lowstone. Forty of the Indians were killed and wounded. Fort l'eek, says the eoncsiondent, is " a famous trading trad-ing post for Indians and an infamous infa-mous one for whites." This is the Vncy whither the two thousand lilies, recently discovered on a Missouri Mis-souri river boat, and marked " Hardware,'' Hard-ware,'' were destined. The Xew York iSioi gives farther information j in regard to this post and its owners, i lHifreo it l'eek , who are said to own a ! majority of the trading posts along ; ihe river. U seems that !;u-t winter 1 charges against this firm were made 1 .uid circulated in Congress; that See- j retary Pel.mo was accused of givinc 1 them private contracts for transport- ! iug all Indian supplies on the river; j and that they had improved 1 the opportunity to fleece the government roundly. The circular stated that it was not an uncommon thing for the 1 vats of this firm to start from Sioux City with a full load of ! from two hundred to three hundred 1 tons, and delivering half at some iu- ! termediato point take a receipt for ' the full amount, carrying the balance ! to Fort IVn-k. By this sharp practice, ; half the cargo, or any portion desira ble, w.is stolen from government. Of course the agent, giving a receipt in ) full for half a cargo, lo-t nothing by j such little acconimo 1 .tion. and of i course Pufree A l'eek knew their : man. Although Congress w:i fur- nU!iel with "name- and d.ite-," and ; several river Captain? were mentioned I a reliable witne. the matter was1 ! hushed up without the U a-t att-nipt t to investigate. The rea.--n 'i-r this is not generally known, but it is -ud i that Delano has a son. .I-m. who is interested in the little sp ui.tions of j Putiee A l'eek: and th .t the proper iiitluenee" wa btvught to bear to j suppress- in.uiirv.
