Show SOME LIVING PIONEERS II I Hiram B Clawson is a native of New York and was born at Utica Oneida I county on the 7th of November 1S26 His father died when he was quite young and lie was thrown upon his own resources carl in life but has min I aged to successfully combat all difficulties which have confronted him and is today one of the foremost citizens of the state 1 u Soon after the death of his father his mother joined the Mormon church i this being in 1838 and three years later with her family consisting of Mr I i Clawson his brother John and two sisters removed to Nauvoo In this city j I he displayed great ability as a debater and despite his youth attracted the j attention of Joseph Smith Jr the founder pf the church who encouraged the young man in many ways I He is one of the oioneers and founders of this state coming here with no less a person than Brigham Young himself who was his companion on the journey He was at that time but 22 years of asp but his worth was well understood and it was conceded that he was very close to the president of I the church Mr Clawson had charge of the first work in the line of bulldintr which was attempted by the church and constructed a little adobe building which I was used for an office on the south side or the site of the council house Later he constructed the council house itself Truman Angell being the ar chitect while Mr Clawson had iharse of the masons Later he was maie clerk inthe ofliqe of the presided and conducted the business of the same j j I I I i 1 HIRAM B CLAWSON I for many yeacs He also had charee of the private business of President I Young for a long time during which he assisted in < the erection of the Salt Lake theatre It was at this time he became a member of the first dramatic company organized in Utah of which Phil Margetts H K Whitney and i many other wellknown pioneers mere members Mr Clawson was the com panys character actor The first play produced was Robert Macaire in which the subject of this sketch took the part of Jacques Strop John Kay I appearing in the title role Phil Mareetts as PieVre Miss Orum as Marie and Miss M Judd afterwards Mrs Margarett Clawson as Clementina Under the direction of President Young Mr Clawson organized the Deseret Dramatic I Dra-matic asooiation for which the theatre was erected The theatre was opened and dedicated March 8 1862 Hamlet being the entertainment It was in 1S50 that he achieved the distinction of adjutantgeneral of the I 1 Utah militia He took part in the Indian wars as aidedecamp to General I D H Wells and upon the death of James Ferguson succeeded him as ad I jutantgeneral I I He engaged heavily in mercantile pursuits in 1SG3 and was a member j lof the firm of Eldredge Clawson which succeeded the partnership of Hooper Eldredge Subsequently when Z C M I was started the stock I was purchased and Mr Claw on became superintendent Under his management manage-ment the pales of the institution increased until in the time of the panic of I 1S73 they amounted to the sum of S 500000 annually When the panic of = = = = = L = c d II I I I i I I l I I = itk I i I MAIN STREET IN EARLY DAYS FKOLFWALKER BEOS COBNEE SHOWING WHITE HOUSE CORNER I THE BICHABDS HOTJSE i AND OTH EB OLD LANDKABKS From a Photo by C W Carter that year set in Mr Clawson and H S Eldredge were sent east to arrange for fie credit of the institution and did it so successfully that the concern paid off its paper amounCing to 51800000 in eight months afterward It was about this time that Mr Clawson was succeeded by W H Hooper as superintendent super-intendent which he held for IS months being succeeded again by Mr Clawson who held the place until 1S75 when he resigned Since that time he has engaged in business for himself at various times with success Mr Clason is highly resnected in the community where he lives and has the esteem of all who have Md relations yllh him business or socal He will rejohe at the celebration ths year and will be pointed out as one of the men who helped make of Utah what she is a great and glorious state r |
