Show ARIZONA OUTLAWS f I DESPERATE DEED t Jim Parker Breaks Jail and Shoots an Attorney l I NOTED ROBBER MAKES HIS ESCAPE POSSE WITH BLOOD HOUNDS UNABLE UN-ABLE TO OVERTAKE HI1VT ALE OVERTAH His Victim the Assistant District I Attorney is Fatally Wounded With a FellowCriminal He Held Up a Livery Stable and te Two Rode Away Just Tell < Them That You Saw Us Were His 1 Parting Words Partng t Prescott Ariz May 9Jim Parker the notorious train robber who held up the Atlantic Pacific train at Rock Cut in February added another chapter I chap-ter to his history of crime this afternoon after-noon by escaping from the county jail tin t-in company with two other desperate criminals at 1 oclock when all attaches at-taches of the sheriffs office except Jailer Meador were absent The prisoners asked for a bucket of water When Meador went to the jail and opened the door a Mexican charged with attempted murder crowded out with a bucket to get w3 ter No sooner had the Mexican passed out of the inner door than he grabbed I Meador around both arms and Parker and L C Miller in for forgery came out of the door Meador cried for assistance and Assistant As-sistant District Attorney Lee Norris j who happened to be in the office upstairs up-stairs came to his aid He was descending ce scending the stairs when Parker who had in the meantime gone to the jail I ers room and secured two rifles and a doublebarreled shotgun leveled the latter at him and fired Norris when he saw the desperate men with guns retraced his steps and had just turned around when Parker fired the charge left of the taking effect just t the spinal column in the region of the kidneys kid-neys ranging upwards In the struggle between the Mexican and Jailer Meatier the latter was struck a terrific blow on the head with the big iron kev of the outside door producing an ugly scalp wound When Parker shot Norris the Mexican released re-leased Meador and all three prisoners 1 i started to run Although Meador was dazed from the effects of the blow he j fired three shots at them none of which I I took effect The prisoners went directly to Sheriff Jj I Buffners liven stable less tnan half I a block distant and held up the man in charge took two horses and rpde off As they left they remarked to the man In charge of the stable Just tell them f that you 5STru A posse was immediately organized I and started in pursuit with a brace of bloodhounds The escapes got nearly an hours start of the pursurers Otto Miller a brother of one of the escaped prisoners Ward Pritchett a newspaper employee John Fitch and dolph Blair were arrested this evening eve-ning charged with assisting the prisoners prison-ers to escape The nature of the evidence evi-dence against hem is not given out by the officials One of the men accompanying the posse with bloodhounds returned at T cloCk The docs followed the trail ten miles when they became exhausted and were taken off It is thought the posse was only a few minutes behind at the point where the dogs were taken off Sheriff Buffner who was absent at Congress when the affair occurred returned re-turned on a special train at 7 oclock and immediately left in pursuit From 40 to 50 men are now out Posses have been ordered out by telephone from Chapparal and Crowned Kink The physicians pronounce Norris case hopeless Some of the posse returned just before be-fore midnight and report that Munds and Yeomans overtook the escapes at Becks on Lynd creek just before dark A fight ensued in which Miller was wounded but how seriously was not ascertained as Parker immediately assisted him to the horse again and they succeeded in getting away The horse ridden by the Mexican was shot from under him but the Mexican decamped on foot in th ebrush The horses ridden by the officers are tired out and fresh ones have just been forwarded to them but no further news Is expected tonight At this hour midnight Norris condition is critical and he is not expected to live until morning1 |
