the Short Line officials Colonel Dodge of the Rio Grande Western came In yesterday together with Receiver and General Manager Ristine of the Colorado Midland Mid-land who is accompanied by General Freight Agent A P Tanner I Later in the day Stuyvesant Fish president of the Illinois Central arrived in his special cars accompanied by John Jacob Astor The two last named officials were at once taken In charge by Clarence McCornick and taken to the Grand Opera House where they enjoyed the play from a box Mr Astor said the work of the company was very fine and he had much pleasure pleas-ure in stating that he had never seen plays staged costumed and presented better by any of the stock companies in the leading theatres of this character charac-ter THE WESTERNS PLANS Colonel Dodge When seen last evenIng even-Ing In connection with the Object of his visit here declared it was merely his regular trip but that he wanted to be here at this especial time In order to see what was going on There was a twinkle In the colonels eye as he made this statement Continuing he said he was glad the Ogden gateway was to remain open as that was all his road ever asked forGive for-Give us an even chance with the others and we will be all right said Colonel Dodge Questioned concerning the survey across the reservation Colonel Dodge said the object was the running of grades from the summit He denied that the Western contemplated building build-ing a line across there right now in fact said such a thing would not be possible until the reservation was opened However that is well known and needs no reiteration He intimated in the future there might he something in the building of a line through that section which he said was very rich country and would be a good place for a line of road Beyond that he had nothing to relate RECEIVER RISTINE TALKS George W Ristine announced his visit vis-it had no connection with pending matters mat-ters that he and Mr Tanner were hereon here-on a little trip and were going to go back and take a trip through the Ha german tunnel which had not been used by the Midland since 1893 The tunnel has been opened and will be used on the let of November The Hagerman was filled with ice and the management had to blast the same out with dynamite That may sound strange but it Is n fact The snow blocked the entrance so the water could not escape and then the percolation from the roof and sides froze as it came in and finally almost completely blocked block-ed the hole up I did block it so that no train could get through and i was a task of many days to remove the accumulation ac-cumulation of ice cumulaton I FUTURE OF THE MIDLAND Mr Ristine denies the fact that the Midland will pass from the hands of a receiver at once The change will not be made until the 1st c next November Novem-ber The articles have been fled as announced in the dispatches but there will have to be an election of officers which will be held In New Turin City ere the road will change hands As n matter of fact however the Midland has progressed so under the direction of Mr Ristine that I is believed be-lieved he will be elected president and general manager Questioned on this he became suddenly noncommunicat should ive as a conservative railroad man shouldTANNER INTERVIEWED Mr Tanner reported that business was improving in the freight department depart-ment and matters were going along smoothly I is stated the business of the passenger department s increasing every day owing to the Improved train service which has been inaugurated out of Denver which is constantly growing better every day The weight of passenger traffic between this city and Denver Is now carried by the Western and the Midland according to all accounts Mr Tanner by the way is the man again FINNEGAN which he hears wherever he goes I happened at the time he was connected with the Santa Fe and was printed in every railroad paper in the United States Both Ristine and Tanner left for the east last evening U P AND SHORT LINE There i nothing new In the local railroad situation except that the business busi-ness relations of the Union Pacific and the Short Line are being resumed and people are becoming better satisfied with conditions Union Pacific coal is not coming Into the city as yet but it Is believed shipments will be resumed very shortly as the company cannot afford to neglect this market As to the mater of divisions It is understood the lines will prorate business busi-ness and the arrangement is very satisfactory satis-factory to all concerned As a matter of fact the Short Line had the best of it all the time and its receipts were constantly increasing I was In a game where It could not lose President Carr and the others officials are exulting in a quiet way at the showing the road has made As an instance in-stance it may be cited that some time ago 400 cars of merchandise and other stuff was shipped from this city alone This was a wonderful Increase The business of the Short Line went up 20 per cent or thereabouts ITI the spring a revival of trade Is expected In the northwest The line will be la better shape than ever and Will do a rattling business In the states of Idaho Oregoi and Washington Astor and Fish Another party of distinguished railroad rail-road people visiting the city is the one le cy Btuyvesant iisn ana John Jacob Astor The party arrived from New York yesterday afternoon over the Union Pacific and Short Line in two private cars and will depart this evening even-ing for California and other Pacific Coast parts Mr Fish Is president of the Illinois Central Railway company hut since the great system Is neither a competitor nor a connection of any Utah 1ne his coming has no local significance sig-nificance on the railroad subject On the contrary the partys western trip is merely for pleasure and recreation The guests of Mr Fish are John Jacob Astor H Lehr J D W Cutting Dr Ballamy Misa Pomeroy and Mrs Fish accompanied
