Show LIGHTENING AND HAIL I Washington County Visited By Some Phenomenal Storms I St George Utah Oct 10 Washington I ton county has been visited by heavy rain and thunder storms The terrific rifle thunder and lightning was something some-thing unusual in the extreme for this time of the year In the town of Santa Clara the lightning light-ning struck two large mulberry trees standing in front of Mr M A Leav itts residence stripping the bark off them anti C barneys uaaiGvrit ffi cztv > f the trees had th hooks cut from the tugs by the lightning At Washington the house of Willard Larson was struck The lightning passed pass-ed down the outer wall burned a hole clean through a barrel standing by he house and dug a hole in the ground The torrents of rain filled every little lit-tle gulley and wash with water sending send-ing a heavy flood down the Rio Yirgen making it impassable for a time The most remarkable incident connected con-nected with the storm is the piling up of a great bank of hail stones at a place known as Atkinville five miles below St Georire They were carried down a wash from the mountainous country of northern Arizona bordering Utah and emptied into the Rio Ylrgen at the point named above an immense quantity passing down the river The hailstones measured a half an inch in diamater They must have been much I larger before they were subjected to the action of the water |
