Show WATEB FOB ST GEORGE Canal Constructed Through Six Miles of Sough Country 5t George Utah Oct 10Th people of St George have at last seen the partial achievement of an object which has been for many years before the public mind For a number of years past efforts have been made both by the people and the city officials to bring in what Is known as the Cottonwood Cot-tonwood water a stream taking its rise at the foot of Pine valley mountain moun-tain tainThe present city council acting under instructions received at the primary nominating them have been very energetic en-ergetic In their efforts to carry out the wishes of the people in this matter mat-ter And under the able supervision of Councilman Brigham Jarvis have taken the water out some 10 miles northeast of St George A canal two feet deep and four feet wide has been constructed through six miles of extremely ex-tremely rough country which in fact covers all the really difficult work The remaining ten miles of canal which is yet to be made contains few heavy pieces of work The water has been brought through the six miles of canal already coh structed and dropped over the divide and is now being used for irrigation purposes in the Santa Clara field 15 miles to the southwest I is estimated that this stream during the time of low water which occurs in August will furnish 250 inches of water The remainder of the year its value is considerably larger From this service the citizens of St George expect to double the Ize of their city by making i possible to cultivate and build homes upon the lots in the eastern part of the valley I which water are now unused through lack of |
