FILLMORE March 9In the Fifth judicial district court the case of the State vs Carlos and George Young charged with sheep stealing occupied the court all day Saturday At 930 I i J on Sut lay the court reconvened and P Foreman Ed Stevens handed in a t sealed verdict finding Carlos Young guilty a charged and his son George not guilty At 830 today the prisoner I > > was brought in for sentence Defense r sought an arrest of judgment which i was denied as was also an application < for a new trial Judge Higgins gave him some good counsel ostensibly with a view to redemption then Five years in the state prison fell upon his ear like a thunder clap and honest citizens breathed with new hopes Attorney Greenwood applied for letters let-ters of administration in the estate of John T Ashman to yesterday morning about 1 oclock to John Hoile Chew the 13 yearold son of John and lary E Chew In company with two younger brothers bro-thers he had Just finished feeding the stock They hauled the hay to the stock with a team and having finished fin-ished concluded to have some sport The boy got inside the slipnoose of a rope which he had fastened to the traces and started the horses up but had hold of the lines The horses became be-came frightened and ran away dragging drag-ging the boy on the ground In their course was a pile of posts against which the boys head struck breaking his neck The town was thrown in a state of excitement on hearing of the sad occurrence THE CANAL Excitement ran high over the election tion of officers at the annual stock holders meeting of the Gunnison Irrigation Ir-rigation company There was a determined q deter-mined effort to effect a change and < two tickets were put up resulting in the choice of an entire new board The old secretary and of the Gunnison City and Antelope Valley Canal company The officers wRh C A Madson for president have qualified and the corporation is now in fine working order The bringing of its canal above town will allow of 400 lots being added to the present townsite These lots are now platted Good headway has been made on the I canal and it will be finished by another an-other season The owners of the Kearnes and Robbins Rob-bins canal which has been widened and extended to Fayette have filed articles of incorporation and the Highland canal will soon do the same h usual places for posting notices
