Show HOTEL AND CORRIDOR f i T Daniel Frawley and his popular company received a enthusiastic reception re-ception yesterday afternoon at the theatre but the reception accorded them flattering as it was did not compare with the enthusiasm with which they were received by the many friends made during their a too short engagement that terminated at the I Grand a little more than a year ago The company had hardly had time to reach their rooms at the Knutsford yesterday yes-terday morning before the rush commenced com-menced and it continued until the curtain cur-tain was rung up at the afternoon performance per-formance and even then there were a large number of their more Intimate acquaintances who witnessed the performance per-formance from the wings Mr Frawley when seen by a Herald reporter at his room in the Knutsford yesterday morning was the same hale fellow well met of a year ago and when asked for an interview quickly responded that nothing would give him more pleasure than to let the Salt Lake public whose friendship he is proud to possess know of the successes suc-cesses of the company since leaving Mr Frawley said that after closing at the Grand on February 16 last they had gone under the management of Giffen Neill to Portland playing at Boise City on the way Upon arriving in Portland the management became disheartened at the poor business and wa about to disband the company intending to take the leaders with whom they had contracts back to Denver when Mr Frawley upon the urgent request of the remainder of the players assumed the management paying 1000 for the privilege He had at that time just 1040 which left him 40 capital for running expenses but business picked up the Portland public pub-lic found what an aggregation of rare talent they were given the opportunity of seeing and at the close of their four weeks engagement after paying all expenses he had a cool 2500 to carry him Into Frisco Then said Mr Frawley we had a great run on what is considered an unlucky number 13 We were a company of thirteen players play-ers and arrived In Frisco on a Friday and opened ait the Columbia on the 13th of May for a season of ten weeks which was extended three making thirteen and the net returns for that time were 13000 Now If 13 is an unlucky un-lucky number I am looking for a lucky one Friedlander and Gottlob lessees and proprietors of the Columbia theatre made me an offer at the close of my season fo a half interest In the company com-pany and as they were the only people peo-ple controlling a theatre in Frisco ou side of the Hayman octopus with whom I did not care to league myself I let them have i after considerable fencing over terms for J6000 This I gives me a theatre at all times In the greatest show town of the west After closing In Frisco we played in all the j principal cities i iths south of CaUfor it t nia spending four weeks In Los Angeles and carrying away 4000 Of their savings After going back to San I Francisco we played a return engagement engage-ment of eight weeks before starting on the northern circuit of Portland Tacoma Seattle Helena Butte Boise Pocatello and Ogden In each of these cities we did a fine business in fact out of seventytwo weeks of continual playing we have had but two In which we lost money We will go from here to Denver and as we will be playing there the 18th of March the annivr sary of the organization of the company pany I will give a banquet In celebra tion of the ton event From Denver we go east a far a Omaha where we > will disband I have engaged of my present company so far for next season seaso only MT Arbuckle Mr Enos and Miss r Bates and I may close with some more before disbanding Next year I will wi have for my leading lady a star who has played in Salt Lake within the last two years and who ranks among the very highest We have secured all of Cranes plays and a great many of the Frohman successes of the last two years With these and the company we are going to have we are anticipat antcpt ing greater success than ever before The San Francisco public appreciates a good company with a good reper toire of plays and we have no doubt that we will receive the patronage we deserve The company played in Ogden last night and will arrive from there on the 930 train this morning laying over here until 130 when they will leave for Colorado points stopping at Prpvo en route roue S Talking about actors said one of a group in a corridor last evening re minds me of an incident I once wit nessed In a New York theatre Harry Corson Clarke the Salt Lake favorite and inimitable Sal Lke favorip ad inmiable comedian was the star in this little scene You know that the loft over the stage is as full of rigging a a fourmaster under full sail and its a wonder that such incidents as Incdent the one I am about to relate do not occur frequently because the rigging is geared up with all sorts of weights and ithe ropes are not examined one in five years Well Clarke was stand onfe ing right in the centre of the stag when a big brick covered wtth can vans came down with a bang just grazing his classic brow and startling starlng the audience To any other man this would have proved very embarrassing but not so with Clarke He merely gazed at the object then glanced at the audience and in that funny drawl of his remarked Til just take a walk around the square for exercise With that he walked slowly around the weight the fall of which came so near cracking his skull It saved the day and Clarke brought the house down W A Williams of the Pauley Safe company of St Louis who leaves to day for the northwest talked for soma time to a group of travelers In the Templeton last nignt His words were principally upon jails but he also talked on other interesting subjects In the number of days that Ive been here fee began I havent got a single order and so I think Ill go north where my business Is better I cant convince your people that you must have new jails or new pat eat cells at present and as there is a pretty good demand for such things in Oregon and Washington it will pay me better to go home Business is not nearly so good any where as It was a couple of years ago and this Is not due to the fact that the number of criminals has decreased but I think Its a direct result of the hard times We constructed the coun ty jail here the1 penitentiary the Provo Ogden and other Utah jails You have a very fair little town but I could suggest a couple of im provements The first would be that these big blocks be cut into four because be-cause Its too far to walk when you want to turn z corner Then again you have no weather like we have in Washington The Corridor man interrupted with Praise the Lord He continued that Utah was so warm In summer that all one needed to don was Bill Nyes favorite articles of clothing his own integrity and a pair of goldrimmed spectacles and that it was so cold in winter that a civilized man couldnt stand it Mr Williams and the crowd couldnt agree on the weather and so the party broke up for the night U S S One of the most prominent married ladies m the city could tell a very funny little incident which happened to her yesterday if she only wished to but as she wont be likely to tell it the Qorridor man will tell It for her She was walking along near the Knutsford not paying particular attention at-tention to anything or anybody and as she looked along the sidewalk saw what appeared to be a greenback of large denomination She hurried toward the coveted certificate and was in the aot of stooping for it when she heaid a slide like Tony Barker used to make when he was after the home plate and a big black hand tightly clasped the precious fiver for such it proved to be A big sixfoot culld gentleman was the winner and he sauntered away chuckling and rolling his big saucereyes while Mrs looked amazed then became embarrassed embar-rassed then blushed scarlet looked up and down the street to see if anyone had seen the affair and hurried away happy that no friend had appeared upon the scene To anyone standing on that Third South street corner it was a funny yes a comical sight to see that lady of fashion and that desperate des-perate son of Ham both make a fiii o for that stray fiver n John Lind of New tIm Minn Is at the Knutsford Mr Lind was a member
