| Show DENNIS WAS ACQUITTED firs Robinson Declares the Spirit of the Lord is in Her SH TOO WAS DISCHARGED I INDICTMENT AGAINST GEORGE OL I SOX DISMISSED BY PROSECUTION I I Augus 7 I Cannon jr Plena Not Guilt to Battery D Clark I Pleads Guilty to Forgery and Is I Sent By For Eighteen Months Two Damage Suits Filed Cascw Arcucd in the Supreme Court 1rolmte Court Orders The case of adultery against Israel F Dennis was resumed in Judge HUes court yesterday morning Dennis who claimed to be the founder of a new religious sect which he called the church of the First Born was charged with committing the crime with one of his converts Mrs Susannah Robinson Robin-son 1lr SPRY MR DAWSON The first witness yesterday was Mrs Robinson who testified on further direct di-rect examination that she was sealed to Dennis on April 6 1895 but denied having ever had criminal relations with him She showed the utmost contempt I con-tempt for Mr and Mrs Dawson I Why she said Dawson came to meeting after I was at his house with Dennis and bore testimony He jumped jump-ed several feet high saying that it was good today but it would be better tomorrow She denied that any of the brethren or sisters had ever charged her with criminal intimacy with Den nis She said Mrs Bell a sealed to Dawson and that Mrs Bell told her I that she Mrs Bell and Dawson were criminally intimate and that Mrs Dawson Daw-son told witness that she must sustain such relations with Dennis but witness never consented to anything of this sort t1s STRANGE HALLUCINATIONS Under cross examination she grew very excited and screamed at the top of her voice The spirit of God is in me and you can blacken my character as black as hell but he will still be with me and strengthen me He ha been with me while I was in prison and he is with me now When referring to the time she was annointed by Dennis at Dawsons house witness said the room was suddenly filled with light and there was a light upon my head I thought I was in heaven and I received testimony there that Brother Dennis was all he pro fessed to be I caught him by the hand and inquired who are you 7 and received his answer 4I am the father of the first born As to the disagreement between Dennis Den-nis and his counselors Dawson and Ross Mrs Robinson said that the trouble among them arose because they wanted to compel Dennis to be guided by them in church matters and to I make Dennis act the part of a sub Dennis declared he would have no straps on him and then the counsel lors threatened to break up the church I of the First Born and start a rival church of their own THE DEFENDANTS WIFE I I I Mrs Sadie Dennis wife of the de fendant was Che last witness called I I for the defense She testified that she I was born at Zanesville O at Zanesvle and was a I student of the Putnam Presbyterian I I seminary She moved to Illinois and I was engaged in evangelistic work for thirty years was married to the de fendant fifteen years ago joined the I lS9o Church On of the First Born in February April 10 the date on which Ithe adultery was alleged Mrs Bell mother of Mrs Dawson came to the I tent where witness and her husband lived and requested that Mr Dennis I go and minister to Ir Robinson who a sick He took the sacred oil and was gone about half an hour oi Mrs I I Robinson was very sick but the next day witness saw her and she was then perfectly cured Witness was present In December when Dawson and Ross wanted her husband to accept their counsel but they never made any reference to any immorality between Mrs Robinson and Dennis I Dawson and threatened to bra up the church if Dennis persisted I in refusing to take counsel Witness t lived with her husband at the tent and was there most of the time and never I saw anything wrong in the conduct of her husband and Mrs Robinson JURY SAYS NOT GUILTY This closed the testimony and length arguments were made to the jury by County Attorney Whittemore for the prosecution and by Attorney W R Hutchinson for the defense The case was given to the jury about 4 o clock and after about abut afer fortyfive minutes consultation they returned into court with a verdict of not guilty The case against Mrs Robinson who was indicted with Dennis was was then dismissed on motion of the moton prosecution prose-cution cuton |
