Show XEELYS ETHttKIC ENGINE I Scientific Men Witness the Operations Opera-tions of Two Models Philadelphia dispatch to St Louis GlobeDemocrat There were gathered yesterday afternoon in the laboratory of John W Keely 1422 North Twentieth I Twen-tieth street several scientific men who at the invitation of the inventor were present to witness a demonstration of his inventive genius as illustrated by I his recently modified etheric engine Those who composed the party were I Mr Francioli gneral manager of the Manhattan Elevated Railway New York Mr Pierson mechanical engineer and his assistant Mr Sterrltt of the I Metropolitan Traction company New York Mr Brown chief electrical en gineer of the Western Union Telegraph company and Mr F G Green also of New York From this city were General Thayer Charles B Collier John W Keely and Lancaster Thomas The railway men were not here in their oliicial capacity although it is generallly understood should they become be-come convinced of the practicability of the inventions of Keely both the elevated ele-vated and Metrooolitan Traction will be recommended to adopt them as the motive force on the lines which they represent It was about midafternoon that the gentlemen gathered in what is one of the most mysterious workshops in the world Mr Collier took pains to show every one the manner in which the engine en-gine was constructed both by detailed drawings and photographs first and then showing a small model of the engine en-gine as it stood on a glass plate an inch thick The placing of the engine on the plate of glass and raising it on steel pins 1 or 2 inches showed the spectators conclusively that there was no mysterious connection through wires with any other force than that which Mr Keely chose to generate by his sympathetic transmitter The engine itself is a complicated structure arranged and supplied with vitalized discs of metal l placed at intervals in-tervals on the two hoops or bands of steel one of which runs inside the other These discs are composed of a metallic composition which for the time being must remain a secretat least until a patent is obtained which the inventor thinks will be in a very I short time For the purpcso of imuartins the I proper stimulus or power to the engine the inventor has a small sympathetic generator It looks to be about the size and shape of an orange On its base is a graduated scale of musical wires A similar scale is attached to the engine Connecting the engine with the generator is a small wire and when say the chord of B fiat is struck on both scales the inner band begins to move at first slowly and then with such rapidity and force that it can not I be stopped until the vibratory motion is annulled After thoroughly examinnig the ma I chine the party was taken to a larger I room and shown a larger machine which ran precisely the same way the small one did But it did not revolve rapidly for the reason that the Inventor in-ventor had just begun work on it more to determine its strength than anything else Next week lie will give an exhi biticn of its power and later on of its velocity The machine which is about 1200 pounds in weight develops fully ten j horse power I |
