Show I TEACKLAYING i A Decrease During the First Hal of This Year Chicago June OThe Railway Age reports that only 622 miles of track have been laid in the United States during the first hal of 1S07 This is less than the corresponding period of any year since 1873 with the exception of I I 1S94 when only 525 miles I of track had I I I been laid up to July 1 In 25 of the states and territories no track has been laid this year Judging from the construction now under way on the different lines the total amount I of track laid during the entire year will I be close to 2000 miles about the same amount that was laid during each of I the last three years So far this year Louisiana leads with 111 miles of track larJ and California is second with 93 Good For the St Louis Gateway St Louis Globe Democrat The territory terri-tory just opened up via the Oregon Short Line can be reached via the St Louis gateway directly and rapidly frOm all points In the east and the importance impor-tance cf the St Louis gateway for transcontinental travel again brought forcibly to the front The Missouri Pacific Pa-cific with its connections has an almost al-most absolute air line from St Louis and clear through from the Atlantic coast to Pueblo and from Pueblo to f Montana Idaho Oregon and Washington Washing-ton points On account of close connections con-nections with the Denver Rio Grande the Missouri Pacific is in a position to almost control the business from eastern east-ern territory mentioned above to the I territory just opened via the terrior up Oregon i Short Line and there is no reason why this business from the southeastern middle and eastern states can not be more easily operated through St Louis than via any other gateway |
