Show OCCASION WAS A I I MEMORABLE ONE I Democratic State Convention at Conventon I Columbus Ohio I I HORACE CHAPMAN I NAMED FOR GOVERNOR ANY ON PRINCIPLES U DIFFERENCES ON MEN It Was t Free Silver Convention Throughout Every Candidate Named Was Pledged to the Cause Implied Arrangement For Mc Lean For Senator But Sorg May Appear in the Field Columbus 0 June 30The Democratic Demo-cratic state convention here today was one of the most memorable political occasions oc-casions in the history of Ohio Following Follow-ing is the ticket GovernorHorace L Chapman Lieutenant governor Melville D Shaw Supreme judge J P Sprigs Attorney general W H Dore State treasurerJames F Wilson Board of public worksPeterH Deg nan School commIssionerByron H Hard I was a convention of unanimity on principles and of differences on men and especially on those who were candidates candi-dates for places on the state ticket In the contests for favorites I was a test of endurance as the delegates took no recess and were in session continually from 10 a m until that hour tonight It was a free silver convention throughout through-out Every candidate hose name was presented was announced as orthodox on silver and the silver doctrine as the cardinal principle for his favorable consideration con-sideration While there were some differences dif-ferences of opinion about adopting the antitrust and the Cuban resolutions there was not a dissenting voice in the convention to the free and unlimited coinage of silver at the ratio of 16 to 1 Without the cooperation of any other nation And the name of W J Bryan was mentioned in some way by every speaker as the only sure way of bringing bring-ing out a chorus c alause While there was no pace on the state ticket accorded to either the silver Republicans Re-publicans or to the Populists yet representatives rep-resentatives of bon these elements cooperated co-operated in the convention and an informal in-formal fusion was perfected The silver Republicans and the Populists are responsible re-sponsible for having no representatives on the ticket as they would not ask i and stated that they were more interested in-terested in the platform than in the ofiices Cf the votes cst for supreme judge I there were 12 for J G Harper a silver Republican R T Hough the favorite for governor was slaughtered because of the ooposition of the rural districts to the McLean men using the large delegation del-egation from Cincinnati Cleveland Toledo To-ledo and other cities to dictate the head of the ticket Those running next were Chapman Welty and Sorg Wellys name was not presented after his I friends learned that Chapman had been I gree upon as the compromise candidate candi-date Houghs name was withdrawn before the balloting began and the name of Sorff was withdrawn before be-fore the result of the first ballot was I announced Although the McLean men I had been in conference during the night and had agreed to go to Chapman they scattered their vote on the first ballot I and did not concentrate on Chapman Ion I-on their second ballot more than was t necessary to nominate so as to dissipate dissi-pate as much as possible the report that McLean was naming the state ticket I Is conceded that the McLean men had an understanding with Mr Chapman and his managers before the convention convened and the vote of the strong McLean counties for Chapman I Chap-man bears out the report In addition to the state ticket nominated there is an implied arrangement for John R I McLean for senator with the state candidates as well as the party organization I or-ganization for him Still it is reported I that exCongressman Paul J Sorg will also be in the field for senator The I McLean men did not name the first favorite for governor or hold the resolutions lutions as they had fixed them last night but the concessions were made in the interest of harmony They wanted nothing in the platform but the declaration for free silver as the paramount issue but they would not vote against antitrust and Cuban resolutions when once presented And they claim all the favor and cooperation coopera-tion with Mr Chapman that they could have with Judge Hough without entail from the rural districts ing prejudice frm rurl distrcts I for having arbitrarily used their power When i became necessary for the McLean forces to rally to Chapman on the second ballot in order to end the contest the solid vote of Highland county the home of Waugh went wih that of the delegates from Cincinnati Cleveland Toledo and other cities that were strongly for whatever McLean wanted Columbus Ohio June ZOThe Democratic Dem-ocratic state convention here today was the most largely attended of any since the civil war While the convention conven-tion was in some respects a mass meet lnf nf CrpA direr fiisinnlsts the larsre attendance was partly due to the fact that a complete new ticket wa to be nominated and there was an unusually large number of candidates for each place These candidates i had their agerheii respective I troops of workers here in addition to the delegates and they aggregated ag-gregated several thousand enthusiastic hustlers Over 1000 such shouters came from the home counties of some of the candidates for governor The new Columbus auditorium with a seating capacity of 6000 was not equal to the demand for admission I The auditorium was beautifully deco Irate I-rate with bunting and plants There was a profusion of portraits of Democratic Dem-ocratic leaders about the walls but those of President Cleveland Senator Brice and other gold Democrats are missing The familiar portrait of William J Bryan was the center of all I and that of the late Allen G Thurman I was quite conspicuous Last yea when John R McLean was selected to head the Ohio delegation delega-tion to Chicago W W Durbin was made chairman of the state central committee and he was reelected last commitee night by the McLean influence while Daniel McConville was also reelected chairman of the state executive committee com-mittee The Silver Republicans held a conference con-ference tonight and expressed great indignation They said it was true i they had not announced they did not want a place on the state ticket but the announcement was not made until told they could not after they were I have it They nominated a separate I ticket The Populists also announced that they woald hold a state convention and have a separate ticket The Prohibitionists Pro-hibitionists will have two separate hibitonists tickets so that there will be at least six state tickets in the field SLOANE CHAIRMAN When the convention was called to order at 10 a m by Chairman Durbin I he congratulated the party on the I signs of the times and enthusiasm in the party He made a speech for free prty silver Then Hop Ulric Sloane was I introduced as temporar chairman He said saidThe people of Ohio and indeed otrthe Union are to be congratulated upon this I large stsbemblage for it is a convention of representatives of the whole people the L masses and not of bosses of trusts or syndicates or of the hired tools of the I despotism of Wall and Lombard street aespotsm greed This convention cornea from the common people and owes its al lance alone to them and Is not here to record the edict of any selfconstituted boss rlng not because of distinguished services serv-ices to the country as statesemei patriot pa-triot or Soldier nor by force or great intellectual in-tellectual attainments but by the sheer brute force of wealth In these respects what a contrast it offers of-fers to the late convention at Toledo I do not say the late Republican convention at Toledo for that convention was not called or controlled along the les I of what the fathers of the Republican party taught but merely to obey the mandates and to do the wU of Mark Hanna ruling bv as verItable brute force as dd any robber bon of the middle aces Assembled at Toledo were men all bearing the eartag of either Hanna or Foraker r ivnl bosses and representing the victory for one or the other such I bosses in every county of the state And such body hypocritically assumed to be acting for the countrys welfare The contests at the Democratic primaries I where there could have been said to be a contest were friendly rivalry as to candidates can-didates for governor They were not as to which boss should be nthroned I hI is expected that Sour temporary chairman shall strike the keynote of the coming campaign Well what keynote I shall be sounded on a silver chord I I will be no new note but a prolongation of I that 5T5decl by the national convention I at Chicago last summer and one that has grown In power and volume since carried i in a grand procession of over 0000000 I votes last November There may be some n this convention though I doubt I who hoped that the silver note was silenced i There were many in the land who immediately i Imme-diately after the last November election l both hoped and believed so but to all such Republicans McKinley Democrats I or followers of the dudes and dotards who met at Indiananolis the renewal of the f slogan of free silver here and InKentucky will be a warning that the fiery cross is speeding over mountain and valley over I hill ana dale over Held and forest summoning sum-moning the silver clansmen to fight the great battle for the people l and receiving no weak or uncertain response Who I doubts that the rich men are despots who that looks calmly ahead but knows that unless prevailing conditions are soon I changed the poor will become banditti I Five millions of men are begging for leave to toil All classes cry to the McKinley Mc-Kinley administration for bread and are offered a stone The people ask for money and Charley Grosvenor pitches them a sugar beet The panacea for all the ills attempted to be ale by the present administration administra-tion is higher taxes The duties provided for In the Dlngley bill are laid expressly I for the socalled protection of certain industries in-dustries which must be so favored because be-cause of an anteelection contract to that effect made by Mark Hanna for a valuable valua-ble consideration I is a bill such a I JamesG Blaine denounced as not designed de-signed to furnish a market for a barrel of Hour or a pound of pork The features of the bill i If sulHciont as I J hl eda i Is claimed I for it to increase our n edo e-do not disclose the elements that will bring prosperity generally to the country and the bill furnishes no remedy to put a stop to raids on the gold reserve whenever when-ever I may suit the policy or greed of the Pierpont Morgans and Rothschilds to make them The Democratic party believes there is a remedy for the present ills I is the restoration by laws to its ancient constituent constit-uent and lawful place along side cold of the silver dollar with free and unlimited I coinage for both at the ratio of 16 to I and both endowed by statute with the I full legal tender power In payment of all debts public and prvate I dilhub gcgndle With such legislation accomplished 1 national bimetallism will exist and international wi national bimetallism will soon follow and I I the peoples of the earth will be free from the tyranny of a selfish oligarcy I All other Questions sink into insignifi I cance compared with that of the restoration restora-tion of the dollar of the daddies Let that be our war cry and make the end and aim of our warfare VictQr thus won wll be but the prelude pre-lude at the much greater victory we shall win when in 1300 under the leadership of William Jennings Bryan we shall sink the roden idol in 1 the sea of eternal obscurity ob-scurity harmless forever more CROSS AND CROWN A large gold cross having as ornaments a crown of thorns and a clock indicating indicatng 16 minutes to 1 oclock formed the centerpiece cen-terpiece imonir the floral designs about the stage Chairman Sloane in gesture pointed to It with great effect as he proceeded ceeded with his vigorous speech There was also a living white rooster perched on the stage to add to the enthusiasm enthu-siasm Mr Sloanes speech was frequently quently interrupted with the wildest demonstrations especially his reference to silver The keynote of everything was silver The glee club sang silver songs and i was on the silver chord that Chairman Chair-man Sloane struck the responses The greatest demonstraton of the morning occurred when he refeed to TMH m J Bryan as the leader of the silver cause for 1900 and I was with this climax that the speaker close hs keynote sneeci A communication was presented from the Populist state commttee also asking for a place on the Democratic ticket with a view to fusion Then the temporary organization or-ganization was made permanent General A J Warner as chairman of the committee on resolutions reported the repOte platform which was loudly cheered and adopted He explained tnt the committee commit-tee was unanimous in presenting the ma jority report that covered the financial question but that two supplemental resolutions reso-lutions would be offered by u minority The antitrust resolution presented to the committee last night was offered by I Casper Lewinstein and adopted as follows fol-lows lowsWe I We hereby declare all trusts and mo nopolies hostile and dangerous to the peoples I peo-ples interest and a standing menace to I the perpetuity of our free institutions and we demand the vigorous enforcement I of all antitrust laws and such additional legislation as may be necessary for their suppression I L C Cole presented the Cuban resolution I resolu-tion that had been offered to the committee commit-tee last night and it was adopted as follows fol-lows I We demand nIl immediate recognition of belligerent rights of the republic of Cuba as an act of justice to u nation struggling for liberty against foreign oppression op-pression and we denounce and protest against the action of Senator Hanna in voting to nullify the memorial presented to congress by the legislature of Ohio in i favor of the Cuban patriots i Nominations for governor almost equally I I between the candidates to contradict the report that McLean was dictating the I i state convention i Before the ballot was completed Joseph balot Dowling withdrew Paul J Sorg and ris dS moved nfo suspend the rules and nominate Horace L Chapman by acclamation Great confusion prevailed Mr Chapman Chap-man Is a large owner of coal mines He has never held office and Is very popular with the miners never having had a strike strikePANDEMONIUM REIGNED The motion of Mr Dowling was finally declared out of order and pandemonium Ire I-re ed for some time There were 959 votes
