Show A REMARKABLE REPORT The report made by the foreman of the Nevada grand jury to which the j I Uber lynching case was submitted is a very remarkable one indeed May I it please the court said he we have examined into the Uber lynching case I and have listened to the testimony of 70 witnesses We have discovered who I the guilty parties are and have sufficient suffi-cient evidence to secure their conviction I convic-tion in every case Notwithstanding I I this fact the jury will not find indictments t I indict-ments and further deliberation will be a useless waste of time I I That Is one of the most remarkable statements ever made in a court In any I state The members of the jury took an oath to do their duty and here they come into court and deliberately state j through their foreman that they know who the guilty parties are and that they have sufficient evidence to secure their conviction in every case yet they I positively refuse to indict them If I that is not contempt of court it would I be a very hard matter to tell what does constitute it I There is but one conclusion to be drawn from this statement which is that the members of the grand jury not I only excuse but justify the lynchers in their lawlessness It Is rarely that men i i sworn to Investigate crime so far betray i be-tray their oaths as to say that they will I I find no indictment even when the evidence j evi-dence Is such as will convict those j charged with crime The action of this grand jury puts a deeper blot upon Nevada than did the I I lynchers The officers of the law should impanel grand Juries and present 1 pre-sent the evidence to them until an indictment I dictment is found or until it is demonstrated demon-strated that a grand jury that will indict in-dict cannot be found in the state More than ever does Nevada owe It to herself to indict and punish the Uber lynchers |
