Show I NEW LABOR UNION 1 IT IS NOW BEIXG FORMED I CHICAGO tug Fight Beinjr Made Asainst the Valklnjr Delegates and Other i Salaried Officers bO Have Used the Bodies of the AVorkingrmen as Stepping Stones I I CHICAGO Nov 10 Nearly 50000 workingmen and women were represented sented at a meeting at Bricklayers hall last night which resulted in the formation of a new central trades union body The organization was not completed but enough was accomplished accomplish-ed to insure the success of the movement move-ment and to indicate a perfect amalgamation amalga-mation of warring factions An adjournment was taken until tonight to-night when the organization will be completed by giving a name to the new body which will probably be the Chicago Chi-cago Federation of Labor and the election elec-tion of temporary officers Permanent organization will be effected at a meeting meet-ing to be held two weeks hence President Samuel Gompers of the American Federation of Labor presided He was assisted by VicePresident James OConnell and P J McGuire The new body will be the only one of the kind in existence It was decided that no delegation would be eligible who are not earning their living inactive in-active work at their trades It was also decided to bar out salaried officers of local unions and federal labor unions The proposition to admit walking delegates and others not actively engaged en-gaged at their trades was hotly contested con-tested President Timblin of Typographical Typo-graphical Union No 16 led the fight against admitting the men who have led and dominated the labor movement move-ment in Chicago for many years He declared many of the old leaders walking walk-ing delegates and other salaried officers of-ficers had repeatedly sold out their organization and used their positions as stepping stones to political jobs |
