Show I SWEEPING THE HEAVENS I Good Work Done by the Lowell Low-ell Observatory Ob-servatory MADE MANY NEW DISCOVERIES b Observatory to Be Removed to Mexico Object In to Secure Good Seeing During Du-ring the Winter Months and Experts Ex-perts Say This Can Dc Obtained In the Mexican Plateau StarGazers 1 Gazers Will Ilevelve a MOst Royal Welcome From the Mexican Government 3 Gov-ernment Much Important AVorlc Ahead I J FLAGSTAFF Ariz Nov 10The Lowell astronomical observatory which was established here in 1S94 for the study of the planets especially Mars Is In process of removal to the City of Mexico The lenses of the great telescope tele-scope have been removed and the machinery ma-chinery is being taken down to be shpped in a few days The object of going south i to secure good seeing during the winter months and the experts ex-perts who have studied the question say this can be obtained In the Mexican plateau which lies within the tropics and has an elevation of about 8000 feet J above the sea level SE level The observatory was in active operation opera-tion here during 1S94 and 1S95 and many hundred of fine drawings were made of Mars the results showing that our neighboring planet is covered with an extensive system of canals arranged in an artificial manner as if the work of intelligent beings These researches were made by Professors Lowell Pickering Pick-ering and Douglass and have attained worldwide celebrity Professor Low ells discoveries Induced him to order anew a-new 24inch telescope from Alvan Clark Sons with a view of prosecuting these studies still further The thEse sti new etescone has been In use here since I August 1S96 and many new discoveries have been made The work has been centered upon the planets and southern south-ern stars Professors Lowell and Doug lat have continued their observations of Mars while Professor Lowell and Mr Drew have worked on Mercury and Venus during the day time In the I clear air of the afternoon these planets have shown conspicuous workings and the astropomers have been able not I merely tq make maps of the surfaces bit to prove conclusively that the bodies rotate once only in the course of a revolution above he sun One face of the planet is1 i therefore turned towards to-wards the sun and heated to an immense I im-mense temperature while the other Is vrapped in everlasting night The markings down by Lowell have settled the question of the rotation of Mercury and Venus that had been partially studied by Schiaparilli some years ago Mr Lowell finds that Mercury has no appreciable atmosphere while Venus has an abundance of it but for some reason yhe possesses only a very fe clouds Drawings of her markings have been forwarded to the Royal Astronomical Astronom-ical society in London Dr T J J See and Mr Cogshall have used the new telescope on the southern doubles double-s ars and it is announced today that since August 1 they have discovered 150 new stellar systems besides measuring 100 stars recognized by previous ob I servers In Mexico Dr See will continue con-tinue hs sweeps for new double stars I and in this more southern latitude opportunity I op-portunity for new discoveries will be especially good I No important work on the double stars of the southern heavens has been done since the survey of Sir John Herschel i Her-schel 60 years ago The plan is to sweep over the whole of the unknown I region of the sky about the south pole j and it is believed that hundreds of new twin stars will foe found The Mexican government Is keenly alive to the importance im-portance of this scientific expedition I and President Diaz has not only welcomed wel-comed the American astronomers but has instructed the Mexican national observatory i ob-servatory to furnish every possible aid to them in their work I is said that the expedition will prove the most important im-portant scientific enterprise of this century cen-tury |
