Show WHO WILL BE PRESIDENT Snag In the Way of Electing a Short Termer i The organization of the board of education C edu-cation next Thursday evening is a matter 0 a2 around which no little interest centers z51 but upon whom the honors will fall will remain an uncertainty until the last hour Through courtesy and by precedent the presidency would go to one of the short term members and plans have besn work ing to make the selection in accordance with this theory Now however a serious se-rious obstacle is in the way and If the president is chosen from among Messrs Critchlow Colton Newman Young or Baldwin who were elected tor the term I i of one year it will be because eminent legal minds concur in expressing the opin I Ion that the law permits the naming of a president for a shorter term than two I years R W Young or W F Colton are regarded as the choice of the members i elect for the presidency but if neither is i vested with the honor it will be for tho reason that the term of office for which they wets elected makes them ineligible I Mr Critchlow is the only other one of the shortterm members who has not served on the school board The law in I the case is to the effect that the boards president shall be chosen for the term of I two years After the next election there I will be easy sailing from the fact that tho members will be elected biennially five at a time for a term of four vears The other live memberselect of the board Messrs Wilson Giauque Moyle Brigham I and Nelden will serve for three years and none of them is anxious to dcDrive one of their shortterm colleagues of chic I tlon to the presidency if they are lawfully I 1 qualified for service In the chair for one year It is a unique proposition and some legal advice will be necessary to make it clear as to who will be the boards president For treasurer the names of Joslah Barnett Bar-nett Harry T Duke and H G Whitney 11 are freely mentioned as Is also L H 4 Farnsworth The latter has never been custodian of the boards funds and the fact that the other three have Is being made1 to count in Mr Farnsworths favor Since no salary has attached to the troosurership the custodian has In reality been a representative of one of the banks three of the banks having taken it in ro tation In line with precedent the treas urership will go to a bank official and if the fates decree that an Institution that has not been favored thus far It is not unlikely that L H Farnsworth of WalkT Bros bank will be chosen It is anticipated that John B Moreton the efficient clerk of the board will be reelected At least that Is what a couple I cleric or prospective concede opponents to the present Superintendent Millspaughs term of office does not expire till next June |
