Show A MYSTEROUS DELY I No Effort to Hasten Departure For the Philippines 1 MAYBE TWO WEEKS MORENO MORE-NO ONE KNOWS WHEN EXPEDITION EXPEDI-TION WILL SA Vessel Owners Say They Have Received Re-ceived No Hurry Orders Merritt Making Assignment of Tps Iowa and Tennessee Volunteers Ordered t the Philippines San Francisco June 2The report from Washington that the annexation of Hawaii is about to b consummated Is given much credence by the officers at Camp Merntt and they are already figuring figur-ing upon an order to send troops to the islands to look after Uncle Sams Inter ests and some of the volunteers wno rear that they will not b sent to the Philippines Philip-pines are counting upon being ordered to choice Hawaii as a place of second General Merritt Is arranging the details de-tails of the second expedition to the Philippines but has not jet made public the assignment of troops for the expedition expedi-tion and he will not make the order pub wi lc ton until the date of the sailing of the fleet has been determined feet is stated In some quarters that the expedition pedition cannot possibly said for two weeks yet cnnot it Is even semiofflcially stated that the vessels will not be ready for ten days Just who Is to blame for the delay Is a mystery The owners of the vessels say that they have not receiazd any hurry up orders from Washington and that they can perform their share of the contract at short notice as soon a definite order are received The Brutus the collier recently bought by the government will be ready to g to I sea next Saturday Her alterations have been completed and she is now receiving stores A spare propeller for the Brutus and six spare blades for the Montereys twin screws will b included In the freight The Monterey is taking coal on In sacks and her magazine Is well fled She too will b ready by next Saturday The Monadnock is expected shortly from luget sound I is the belief In naval I circles to Honolulu that the Monadnock will ba sent ARTILLERY FOR IA L Four batteries of heavy artillery now bateries Presidio will g to Manila with the next expedition and their places at the Presidio will b filled by men from the ranks of the heavy artillery volunteer forco now In camp at the Presidio The present formation of brigades at foraton To Camp Merritt is only temporary and made only for administrative purposes A reorganization re-organization will be effected when the se and expedition reaches the Philippines i The scarcity of wpter on the Presidio reservation has thrown the men now encamped camped there in a serious predicament The supply In the reservation reservIr I is about exhausted and the pumps which supply the water are not powerful enough I to keep tho reservoir filled Stringent order or-der have been Issued cautioning the men I stationed at tho Presidio against any Unnecessary I necessary waste of water and the men have been ordered to discontinue bathing until the situation can be remedied I General Merriam has issued an order directing ecting troop E Fourth United States rectng cavalry to proceed here at once from Vancouver to Join the four troops now stationed at the Presidio The troop Is ex ected to arrive In this city within a week Battery C of the heavy artillery of volunteers now stationed at the Presidio has received orders to proceed to Fort Janby next Sunday The Pennsylvania volunteers are In a serious plight They need shoes so badly that the regiment is seriously crippled for lack of them Many of the men cannot drill on account of the dilapidated con Itlon of their foot gear DAKOTAS ARRIVE A regiment of volunteers from South Dakota numbering 1008 men arrived In this city this afternoon The regiment was divided Into three battalions each detachment occupying one train The rains came in about 45 minutes apart and while the frt train load was awaiting ing the arrival of the second and third ho ladies of the Red Cross society enter tamed them The men were given a fine luncheon and during the Intervals the Minnesota volunteer band discoursed mill ory music The second and third battalions bat-talions were equally well received After a short rest the soldiers were mustered Into line and started on the march to Camp Merritt They were greeted along ho line of march by cheers and other demonstrations of welcome including the ring of bombs The South Dakota like their neighbors from North Dakota are a fine body of men but are lacking In equipment Seerl of todays arrivals had to be taken to the camp In the hospital ambulance ambu-lance as they were suffering from slight ailments otherwise the health of the Dakota boys is good |
