Show CAPTAIN YOUNG IS NOWA A MAJOR Commands Utah Battalion of Light Artillery IMPORTANT PROMOTION FOR UTAH SOLDIER Identity of the Utah Artillery Will Thus Be Preserved I It Is Understood That Lieutenant Gibbs Will Be Promoted to the Command of Battery ASergeant Aldrich Receives His Discharge Equipment Received For the Batteries I Bat-teries How Caines Troopers Are Faring In Camp Special to The Herald San Francisco June 2The expected word has arrived and Richard W Young is major of the Utah battalion of light artillery Captain Young received re-ceived an order from brigade headquarters head-quarters this afternoon instructing him to organize the two batteries into a battalion and to consider himself major of the same until the official papers arrive from Washington This order gives what the people of Utah have greatly desired viz That her troops have their Identity preserved pre-served Under this plan whatever they I do will be distinctly traceable to them and no other troops will be combined with them Captain Youngs promotion raises the question of promotions all along the line It is understood that Lieutenant Lieu-tenant Gibbs is to be captain of battery bat-tery A a position for which he Is thoroughly qualified The rank of lieutenant is i to be determined by lot and today Captain Young asked authority from brigade headquarters to determine the rank in this manner and also asked them to prescribe in what way lots were to be cast Tonight a sensation was sprung on batter A when it lined up for drill Sergeant Ethen Allen read the following follow-ing order In pursuance of order No 103 of the war department Sergeant William F Aldrich is discharged from the service of the United States Signed RICHARD W YOUNG Captain U S V Commanding Inquiry into the cause developed the fact that he had applied for a discharge dis-charge before the battery left Salt Lake and the time between now and then had been needed to get a reply from Washington It Ifrumofed that his request for a discharge was at the Instance of the officers Itt is expected that Corporal Brown who Is thefirst ranking corporal will fill the vacancy caused by Sergeant Aldrichs discharge dis-charge The officers were kept busy today dealing out the equipment received to the men Today two battery wagons and forges arrived and were lined up beside the guns They contain everything every-thing needed for the repair of any part of a cannon that may bednjured in an engagement Several more loads of equipment are evxpected to arrive tomorrow to-morrow The batteries signed the government pay roll today which Indicates that they will be paid off In the near future Each man will be paid up to June 30 RUSSELL Battery A |
