Show GREAT TREASURE IT IS SAID TO BE HIDDEX IX A KANSAS KAN-SAS CAVE One of the Unusual Stories that Come With the March AVinds and April Showers Hay Be True this Time SALINA Kan March 29People living liv-ing in and around the little town of Hope west of here in Dickinson county coun-ty are considerably excited over the I belief that a great treasure is hidden in a cave in that vicinity I Thlrt years ago a settler living in Morris county east of Dickinson cared for a sick stranger whQ when near to death told them that he was the last of a gang of outlaws who for several years had infested the Santa Fe trail west from Council Grove In return I for the kindness of the family the man confided to them that a large treasure of money and aluables was I hidden in a cave at the head of Turkey Creek and that he alone knew of its I location Just before his death he made an elaborate chart of the cave showing just where the treasure was hidden The man to whom the drawing was given went at once to the head of Turkey Creek near where the town of Hope now stands and in company with Jack Markley who still lives on the creek made a careful search but failed to find any cave Five years later a Michigan colony settled along Turkey Creek valley One day a herder tracked a wolf to a cave at the head of the creek hidden in a dense growth I of brush and vines The Michigan i people knew nothing of the cave story rand Markley did not hear of the discov i ery of the cave For twentyfive years I i the spot has been visited but seldom j I Recently the tract was bought by A j Henquent who proceeded to prospect 1 in and around the cave for gypsum I 1 was then that Jack Markley heard of j its discovery and recalled the treasure I story Mr Henquet became interested and I made a trip to Morris county to look for the man with the drawing He had long since died but his widow was living and told them that the chart was in the possession of a marneCJ daughter who lives in California Steps were at once taken to secure it but it has not yet arrived I is recalled that thirtyfive years ago the hilly country at the head of Turkey Creek was the rendezvous of a gang of desperadoes des-peradoes who terrorized and plundered plunder-ed the settlers and travelers Later on the gang was broken up by the United I States troops The cave has a small opening but widens to large dimensions dimen-sions and has never been thoroughly explored I is being closely guarded I until the plat arrives |
