Show RECH IS HELD A Denoument that is Decidedly Interesting In-teresting PHILADELPHIA March 29John Rech the Estelville N J farmer who was arrested in Bustleton Pa on suspicion sus-picion of having murdered his wife Elizabeth Eliza-beth at their home was brought to police headquarters in this city and is held here pending investigation I has been learned Mrs Beth was none other than Bessie Weaver whose troubles with her father and his housekeeper afterwards her step mother gained wide publicity a dozen years ago She was the daughter of Dr Martin Weaver a I WEALTHY BUT ECCENTRIC resident of Germantown He died leaving leav-ing an estate of over 50000 entirely to his second wife Soon after his death Bessie married William Heft of Germantown German-town She had previously beg 1 proceedings proceed-ings against her fathers 1tebut compromised com-promised on an arrangement by which the income on the estate was divided between be-tween Bessie and her step mother during the remainder of their lives In 18S7 Heft secured a divorce on statutory grounds and she soon afterwards married Henry W Pachman of this city Pachman also obtained a divorce Attorney C W Will jams of the Philadelphia hal was trustee trus-tee for the estate Upon the occasion of Mrs Rechs last visit she told Mr Will j lams she had made up her mind to leave her husband because he treated her badly I and he noticed that two of her front teeth I were missing Rech it Is 1 said today I I made a confession to the police admitting i I ht murdered his wife for the purpose of I enjoying the money left by Dr Weaver to his daughter Elizabeth The authorities authori-ties refuse to I REVEAL THE DETAILS of the confession I is said Rech claims the couple were not lawfully married although I al-though a ceremony was gone through j I before a justice of the peace In Jersey City in May 1895 He is said to have I confessed he has a wife and daughter in I Catasaqua Pa I is claimed he and Elizabeth Weaver conspired to let him become the beneficiary under the will of her father In case of her death As the first step In the conspiracy it is said I the woman made a will leaving her in I heritance to Rech in trust for their children i child-ren They had yet to obtain a child I AVhen they appeared in Estelville she began be-gan to make I appear they had a child in this city About six weeks ago they are said to have come here and advertised adver-tised for an infant about ten months old One was obtained which is said to be the illegitimate offspring of a prominent society woman by a New York businessman business-man With the child they returned to Estelville The resolve to MURDER THE W > MANr i Is said entered Rechs mia suddenly but the manner in which if was eJYr not stated I occurred last Saturday week I seems however he strangled her while she slept and carried her to the grave he had hastily prepared With an axe ho chopped the branches of a tree to hide the spot He came here Thursday night and Friday went to Fox Chase and on Saturday to Somerton where he stopped at a hotel He had previously pre-viously left the child in Philadelphia in a baby farm On Saturday night he read of the discovery of the body and5 began begn trembling so that the hotel proprietor spoke to him He admitted he was John police Rech He was then turned over to the Duels in Berlin BERLIN March 29Three duels have been fought in Berlin within a few days past One of these presented many features that made the case avery a-very painful one A barrister named Zenker challenged Lieutenant Von Kittelhodt of the imperial yacht Ho = henzollern whom he accused of adul tery with his wife At the fourth exchange ex-change of shots Dr Zenker was shot in the lungs and killed Another case was that of an officer ofcer of the guards who severely wounded a civilian This prevalence of the duelling habit causes serious comment in Germany Although duelling is illegal the code of honor recognizes it a binding even it is said by the emperor himself who compels military men to fight |
