the mines The chief end of man according to the revised edition is to get money and yet there is not one man in ten thousand who has any clear conception of here the yellow gold and the beautiful white metal come from being entirely satisfied that it is in circulation circula-tion somewhere and that somehow or other more of it will replace and augment I aug-ment the wealth of the country little thinking that i our mines should closedown I close-down fo two years the nation would be bankrupt They never think of mining or take note of the fact that the mines of the west send forth a constant stream of gold and silver which finds its way into the arteries of trade and commerce I com-merce and upholds the life of the country coun-try in fact if they give the matter a moments thought it is to condemn mining min-ing a a wildcat enterprise and to hold the mine owner up for ridicule when in fact the miner robs no man oppresses op-presses no man and the product of his labor is a commodity of intrinsic value and of enduring wealth No money was ever lost in mining Individually men have lost mosey in prosecuting mining enterprises out the money was not lost to the world and for every cent that has been expended in legitimate mining thousands of dollars dol-lars have been returned as has been proven by the millions upon millions of dolar that have been paid out in dividends divi-dends by mining companies and the many millions more that have been paid out for labor for machinery and a for contingent expenses all of which has been taken out of the ground The money of the world is based on gold and silver but this is never placed If in circulation until it is dug from the ground and has first passed through t the hands of the mine owner the mining min-ing company and the stockholder and i does not come to them in small driblets drib-lets but in good round sums gener ally in regular monthly installments often making a most handsome return on their investment amounting to 20 50 100 and often 1000 per cent and this is why and how s many people are placed in comfortable circumstances within a very short time This is no mere statement but moth facs that can be easily substantiated and Ivy I in Utah there are hundreds of people who monthly receive from 500 to 10000 in dividends whoneed not la licr hot who can safely rely upon receiving re-ceiving a handsome sum called velvet e vel-vet at the end of every thirty days and this all comes to them through what some people call speculation but what we call legitimate mining for they invested money in mining stocks 1 a nominal figure when the properties of the company were in many instances mere prospects and with the increasing value ctf these stocks and the transformation of these prospect into dividendpaying propositions propo-sitions have grown into affluence and wealth This to many might seem like idle talk ould we not point to such Utah I mines a the Ontario with its 15000000 paid in dividends the Horn Silver with its 5080000 the BullionBeck with its p 2500000 the CentennialEureka with w its 1650000 to the fact that the thirteen thir-teen companies listed on the board of the Salt Lake stock exchange have paid 32524600 in dividends to say nothing of the many other great bonanzas in this state During the past few years when panics pan-ics have haken our trade circles from center to circumference thinking men and men of means have taken cognizance cogniz-ance of the stability ofthe mining business busi-ness and have come at last to the conclusion con-clusion that mining as a legitimate and discounted jrofitable business cannot be counted in any walk of life and as a result they are rapidly turning their attention to the west ana more they are beginning to invest their money in the mining industries not as stockholders stock-holders only but also as promoters of mining enterprises such as will eventually eventu-ally return and then a thousand for every dollar that they invest And while this money has been corning corn-ing westward Utah the new state slow in growth but rich in minerai resources J re-sources and ranking as the fourth or fifth mining state in the Union is receiving ceiving its share and the recognition that i deserves Gentle spring as is ever the case bring with it the robin and the bluebird blue-bird but with them this year comes also the capitalist and the investor Already Al-ready our hotels are becoming ng crowded and the railroads report a gratifying increase In nassenger traffic As time advances these gentlemen will be found in our mining camps and we are glad to say that there is not a camp in Utah that will not bear the closest investigation in-vestigation and as a result the men of money will fall into line and with others who have preceded them will proceed to enrich themselves and the world with treasures wrested from the bosom of grand old mother earth Go where he will in Utah the investor inves-tor cannot fail of success and such camps a Park City Eureka Bingham Mercur Frisco Ophir Stockton Silver City La Plata and a dozen other districts dis-tricts present a most inviting field for the legitimate and profitable investment in-vestment of capital for the mineral regions of Utah with their millions already al-ready produced in mining have hardly been scratched as yet Park City though a wonder In the mining line ts still in its infancy Bingham while one of the oldest mining min-ing camps in the state is just beginning begin-ning to attempt deep mining and its ore bodies like an Inkstand exist with the big end down and Eureka and Tintic are even now only coming to the front with their magnificent bodies x > f high grade ores while as for Mercur 1wih its blanket vein of gold bearing Ch I ores extending in its area from twelve miles long and eight miles wide is the wonder of the age and destined to become be-come the greatest gold producing camp in the world We have said that this was to be a mining year and every indication so far will bear us out in this assertion and while the modesty of Utah people ha kept them from saying So The Herald has no hesitancy In predicting that within two years our commonwealth common-wealth will take the lead as the greatest great-est mining state in the Union and that peODle who have come to the decision that mining i legitimate and right and who invest their means in this direction di-rection will come out in the end with a thousand dollars to their credit in the bank to every one they have invested in-vested in this industry THE RED CLOUD STRIKE A Body of Twelve Dollar Ore in the TVeiv Workings Saturday The Herald announced exclusively ex-clusively that a strike had been made in the new workings ofthe Red Cloud mine at Sunshine in Camp Floyd district dis-trict and last night a letter was received re-ceived from there confirming the report re-port and announcing the fact that the ore carried values o 12 in gold to the ton tonThis This will be glad tidings to those who are interested in that end of the district dis-trict as the strike will make a producing produc-ing mine of this property and prove I the continuity of the ore bodies in that locality I will also give additional prominence promi-nence to the Old Fred mine a the new discovery was made hut a short distance from its lines Sunshine is i slowly coming to the front but the camp is a sure winner GROWTH OP CAMP FLOYD I Daily Extending Its Boundaries to All Points of the Compass MERCUR Utah March 28The boom which has been so long expeeled is approaching very slowly > I believe that it is better so than j it came cme I with a rush and took us offvour feet The ubiquitous locator of claims who has staked out the country as far as I the retreating snow permitted all the from Bin way Bingham to Tintic is now turning his attention toward doing development de-velopment work and trying to make the best show fO the advent of the capitalist For a time it was thought that the main extension of our camp would be I in an easterly direction Peepstone sprung up and had its due share of attention I at-tention From thence the excitement spread almost to the Jordan river But I now the prospectors who located the country south from Sunshine and I backed by Salt Lake capital have showed their faith by extensive developments devel-opments are earning their reward Now strikes are reported almost daily especially in the country between Five Mile pass and Seven Mile pass Values Val-ues ranging from 2 to 40 are reported and it seems likely that one or more I producing mines will soon be added to the 1lt I had occasion lately to visit Seven Mile pass where on the Phoebe group a well defined vein of gold bearing mineral ha been opened The vein is traceable throughout the whole length of the group and consists of vein quaVtz in shale between lime stonewalls stone-walls assaying alt the surface 2 andover and-over The formation at this place seems almost identical with that of Mercur There is no reason why a good camp should not spring up there I is situated about seven miles south of Fairfield with a good level road all the way I At Five Mile pass Rawlins and Crttohlow are still working and are said to be obtaining values ranging into the tens heir particular locality seems to b enjoying a little special boom of its own judging from the number of men men who may daily seen at work there This country seems to be located in groups In my perambulations I noticed no-ticed the Golden Knob group the Maude grcaup the Hooster group etc They all seem to show more or less mineral This locality will undoubtedly un-doubtedly soon be favorably heard from Among the foothills on the Rush valley val-ley stope a little north of Five Mile pass a bed of some kind of carbona cous matter has been found yielding from 85 to 90 per cent fixed carbon Of what economic value if any this will prove to be remains to be seen A gentleman from Leadville Cole named Bohn is quietly securing land under the mineral act all over Cedar valley At two points north and south of the town of Fairfield he is sinking shafts I am informed that he will soon have a boring machine upon the ground The public mind is divided as to the object of his search whether mineral or water GLADIATOR GOLD MIXING AT PROVO The Cerro Gordo Mining Company Doing Development Work Don R Coay of Provo who was in the city yesterday informs The Herald Her-ald that the Cerro Gordo Mining company com-pany of winch he is a director has two shifts of men at work on its group of claims in the mountains a mile and a half northeast of that city on which they have two veildefined ledges one of which carries gold and the other copper On the gold ledge work is being prosecuted and at a depth of six feet the quartz shows values of from 1 to 7 in thf yellow metal A tunnel is now being run on the vein and it is confidently believed that large bodies of shipping ore will be uncovered within a distance of one hundred feet The officers of the company are E A Wedgewood president J V Jones vicepresident and George Havercamp secretary and treasurer Provo is possessed of a great many natural advantages and resources and if to them can be added several producing pro-ducing and paying mines the Garden City of Utah will shine forth with renewed re-newed lustre GOLD AT DON XEVADA GOLI Great 4ies of 10w Grade Ore in Sc Dana Canyon Dayton < Kev is likely to exnlence considerable revival in its mining affairs af-fairS during the coming summer says the Western Mining World I has been known for years past that the ledges in Dana1 canyon were very large but It has always been supposed that they were tooslow grade to treat with profit pro-fit SeE l years ago there was considerable con-siderable prospecting done in Dana canyon and at no very great depth some very good sized ledges of gold sore bearing quartz were discovered Among the claims that prospected well and upon which some work was done is the Standard and one or two others The claim showed UD a large ledge f gold ore that assayed from 2 to ZS a ton At this time this find was not considered of much value because the expenses of mining hauling and mill ing weregogreat Since then methods of working gold f ore have come Into use which are much less expensive The Siandard claim is now owned by Messrs Harris Fielding and Clements I and others in Virginia City and the gentlemen are endeavoring to induce capital to investigate the merits of their property I has been shown that Dana canyon and the surrounding country are full of lowgrade gold ledges and the gentlemen propose to make a business proposition of workIng work-ing this ore in about the following i I t manner At the old Ophir isle there is a splendid water power and the distance dis-tance from this point to the farthest point of the mining ground is not over three miles The company will probably prob-ably put in a little electric road to convey the ore to the river where it will be worked by some one of the new and inexpensive methods of reducing free gold ore The fall from the mines j the mill site is considerable so that I very little power would be necessary to transport the ore from the mines to the mill In all probability the ledges can be worked through tunnels which would be the cheapest but if hoisting I is necessary an electric plant at the Jlant mill on the river would readily furnish power which could be transmitted to I the hoisting works Taking all these things into consideration we cannot I but think that the owners of the Standard I Stand-ard and other claims in Dana canyon have a very fine proposition to offer to capitalists for development K L HILLS WEEKLY LETTER The Market Strong and Active With Increased Orders The market has shown strength and activity with an increased numtier of outside orders and a brisk curb business busi-ness Ajax remains in the vicinity of 1 IMtle being offered A few shares of Bulliory Beck changed hands at 675 I a slight advance Transactions have been very light in Centennial Eureka I pending the result of the recent option There were no changes of importance I in Daly or DalyWest I is expected that Daly and DalyWest will both be paying dividends before the year is much oider The Daly reports 400000 in the treasury East Golden Gate recorded re-corded the largest sales regular 52c to fsc and considerable trading in futures up to 75c on expectation ilhat the vein will be cut within sixty days The shaft is going down at the rate of five fet per day but n is not likely to reach the ore body in less than three months when the stock will take a spurt Its close proximity to the Golden Gate ore bodies and the vigor with which work is being prosecuted making it a favorite favor-ite among the listed proparties Dalton and Lark has been in demand without notable change a dividend of I percent per-cent per share will be paid in April They Dolan manager of the Buffalo I Gold and Silver Mining company was in Brigham Monday The Buffalo mine I is located at the mouth of Gibbs canyon can-yon four miles north of Brigham Mr Dolan told a Bugler reporter that the I tunnel on the Buffalo is now in to a depth of 147 feet They are at present I I working two shifts They are now encountering en-countering a very hard wall of rock and their progress is slow and labori I ous but the ore continues to grow richer An assay on what could be I I called nothing but surface rock went 40 ounces silver 8 gold and 15 per cent copper There are three claims in the group all of which Mr Dolan says they expect to develop through this one turanel Now that they are striking strik-ing a better grade of ore they are vigorously pushing the work expecting to open up a paying mine before long Brigham City Bugler Mining Xotcs and Personals Ed Loose of Provo has returned from a visit to the Blue mountains where he made an inspection of the Taylor properties pro-perties Joe Free and Coo C Stainer returned Saturday night from Pole canyon in Camp Floyd district where with their associates they own a group of claims I I of considerable promise Ray Raymond leaves this morning for I Mercur Ray is an artist in many ways I especially with pencil and paper and upon his return our readers may expect a pencil sketch of this progressive camp in these columns The town of Sunshine in Camp Floyd district is making a steady and substantial substan-tial growth Already a good many buildings build-ings have been erected there and last week the population of the camp was increased by the addition of six families I is generally understood that a big deal is on affecting the Hillside group of claims adjoining the Mercur mine and that the same will be consummated within with-in a day or two when active and extensive ex-tensive work in its development will at once begin Frank J Leonard of the Hecla and Golden Seals leaves for Mercur this morning for the purpose of superintending superintend-ing the work being done on these properties pro-perties The Hecla shaft is now down 260 feet and it is believed that the main ore body will be cut by the time the 300 foot ore body is reached From all appearances Matt T Gis born of the Geyser Mining company has I his hands full in the way r of lawsuits but hs friends say that in the end he I will clear himself of every charge made against him and that these suits are brought to influence the pending litigation litiga-tion involving the Geyser Mining company com-pany Tomorrow the Gold King management will employ three shifts in the driving of its tunnel whch is now In 85 feet Next to the foot wall on this promising tunnel tun-nel there is a small body of ore that is high grade while the whole ore body is a paying proposition The Gold King Is located half a mile east of the Mercur mill in Camp Floyd district Last Saturday Joe Luxen purchase the interests of the Lee boys In the recent re-cent copper discoveries on Blue mountain moun-tain just across the line in Routt county and In company with County Assessor Gagon left for that place the fore part of the week loaded down with location blanks The assays they have received run high in copper and they claim they have discovered the vein which is due east of Vernal and about 3 miles distant dis-tant Vernal Express Hal D Brown and J 4 JJrent returned re-turned home Saturday night from their visit to Spring Gulch California where I they are interested in some very promising prom-ising gold quartz properties During their stay in that locality they also inspected some virgin placer properties in Sutter creek that shows values of from four to eight cents in sold to the pan As a result of this inspection > they secured an option on 280 acres of placer ground Including in-cluding timber land and a ranch They were well pleased with their trip and brought back with them a quantity of samples from their Spring Gulch properties
