Show THE GREAT CANALS Colonel William Ludlow Tells of His Inspections LONDON March 29Colonel William Wil-liam Ludlow military attachee of the American embassy at London recently recent-ly sent by the government to Inspect the various European canals with the view of reporting their workings in comparison with the proposed Nicaraguan Nicara-guan canal said to a reporter of the Associated Press regarding his inspection inspec-tion The inspection proved a laborious labori-ous though interesting undertaking I have thoroughly inspected the Suez canal and the officials of that company did everything to assist me and placed a steam yacht at my disposal that I might thoroughly see its workings It Is a wonderful success There is hardly hard-ly any other enterprise In the world regarded purely as a commercial investment in-vestment that has yielded so large a return Its profits must be enormous In fact no one knows exactly what they are Take Englands share In the concern for instance While England does not own a majority of the shares yet its income from this source alone would suffice to maintain some king doms You know the canal was not a success at first but now it proves one of the most useful and successful schemes of the century I went to Greece and witnessed the workings of the Corinth canal While entirely different dif-ferent both in aim and consrruction it is still a success It is a most interesting inter-esting work The original scheme for a canal here was conceived in the time of Nero and one may yet see the original origi-nal test nits that were made by the Romans I also thoroughly Inspected the new German canal This is a wonderful affair and Germany can now use her navy in both seas I had an audience of the emperor in Berlin and told him the German canal was the only one that had been constructed within the original estimates of cost From Germany Ger-many I went to Holland and thorough ly inspected their system of waterways I have yet to visit the Manchester ship canal and possibly the Caledonian canal in Scotland Then I shall submit my report to the Washington govern ment Asked as to his opinion of the feasi bllty of the Nicaragua canal after viewing the workings of the others Colonel Ludlow said I am more than ever convinced it is feasible But until my report is submitted I am un able to make any detailed statement THE 3IARLB0110UGHS LONDON March 29Duke and Duchess of Marlborough have arrived in London after extended wedding trip Great preparations are being made for their reception at Woodstock |
