Show A BIG SLIT It Involve Serious Charges tgainst Prominent People of Colorado NEW YORK March 29The World tomorrow b to-morrow will publish the following Papers Pa-pers will be llled today In the United States circuit court in a suit in which the plaintiff is Kittle A Grlirgs wife of Clark Robinson Griggs a wealthy railroad rail-road contractor of this city Mrs Grlggs sues for 130000 damages against John F Campion Mason B Carpenter and Charles Cavender all of Colorado f Campion is interested in some of the biggest gold mines in Colorado Cay ender and Campion are Denver lawvers j They are charged with conspiring to de fraud the plaintiff out of a threeeights interest in a mining property said to be worth 400000 According to the affidavits 2000 acres of valuable gold bearing land in Colorado were owned and worked in 18S6 by Mr Griggs Amos Tenny William Judson Alfred K Ware and Mason B Carpenter In 18S7 Carpenter said he could sell tho property to John Farwell the p Chicago millionaire for 51000000 Arrangements I Ar-rangements were made by which the F deeds were turned over to the new corporation cor-poration known as the Victoria Mining r company Carpenter it is alleged had himself elected president and employes elected to the other offices The new company com-pany held all the valuable mining property pro-perty but according to Griggs none of the 33000000 as provided in the agreement V7 stock was ever received by him or anyone any-one else Carpenter in 1S93 as president c put on a 30000 trust deed payable In thirty days This was made out to Charles Cavender for the benefit of Cam pion At the expiration of that time the deed was foreclosed and the property sold to Campion for 34874 The transaction trans-action was not recorded it is alleged for some time after the sale and Griggs did not learn about it until Carpenter wrote to him to say the property had been bought in by a general mortgage and that he Carpenter and Griggs had lost all Griggs went to Denver and found the mining property was being successfully success-fully worked by a new corporation known as the Wapiti Mining company of which Campion is president and in which Carpenter Car-penter Is said to have a oneeighth interest in-terest Griggs had long before transferred his Interest in the mining property to his wife hence it is she who makes the complaint com-plaint POTTER IXVWED NEW YORK March 29 Bishop Potter has bean invited by the authorities of Cambridge university in England to be I select preacher to the university during I the month of May 1897 The appointment appoint-ment as select preacher to one of thereat I the-reat English universities never has been conferred before upon a bishop or priest ° f the Americn church so far as the records show The morning sermons on Sunday in term at Oxford fall to the dean the canons the heads of the several col leges the divinity professors and the professors of Hebrew None but the most eminent clergymen holding the high de grees from the universities In Great Brit ain m ever is appointed to the office of select preacher Bishop Potter holds the < degrees of doctor of laws from Cambridge ana is one of the three American clergy men who holds the degree of doctor of I divinity from Oxford |
