Show I In the Hotise of Commons LONDON May 4At the request of I the secretary of state for the colonies Mr Joseph Chamberlain in the house of commons today Mr Henry La Rouohere agreed to postpone until Thursday all questions regarding the publication of the Pretoria cryptograms and in regard to the action the government II govern-ment proposed to take towards the British Chartered South African company com-pany and Us directors I Mr Chamberlain replying to a question said he had received a telegram tele-gram from the governor of Cape Colony Sir Hercules Robinson with reference to the cryptograms which have been construed as implying that Sir Hercules had knowledge of the plan to invade the Transvaal The telegram from Hercules is as follows It cannot state too explicitly that I never received from any one the slightest hint of what was about to occur and the news of the invasion of Dr Jameson came like a bolt out of the blue sky I there should be any insinuation in-sinuation to the contrary I rely upon you to protect my charaoter in my absence Mr Chamberlain added that he had implicit confidence in the statement of Sir Hercules Robinson and he the secretary of state for the colonies never for a moment believed the rumors When Mr Chamberlain was questioned question-ed regarding < the cryptogram from Johannesburg urging that the raid be postponed until Cecil Rhodes had pledged that the imperial government would not assert authority over the Transvaal in event of success Mr Chamberlain replied Mr Rhodes had no authority to pledge the imperial government in any way and I was not aware that Mr Rhodes had done so |
