Show I PEARL BRYAN CASE I I It Drasr Along but Little of Interest Being Drought Out NEWPORT Ky May 4J B Locke who owns the farm where Pearl Bryan was found testified today that he found spots of blood on the ground and saw the marks of wheels of a carriage on the grass close beside the gate that led from the road to the spot where the body wa found George Dayton a bartender was placed on the stand but was unable to answer any questions put to him On crossexamination the prosecution had him identify a letter received from oh Seward of Somerset Ky a detective de-tective working in the interest of Colonel Jackson The letter contained a formal statement of matters which Seward asked witness to testify to when called at the trial The court ruled the letter out I William R Trusty of Urbana I a j I brakeman of the Southern railroad at the time of Pearl Bryans murder testified I tes-tified to meeting Emrfa Evan at 1 oclock on the night of the murder i They were joined by an old doctor a friend of the woman They hired I Trusty to drive cab They stopped at I a house on George street in the tenderloin ten-derloin district where the doctor carried I car-ried the body of G woman from the house into the cab Then they drove across Newport bridge and stopped near the place where Pearl Bryans body was found the next morning The old man carried the body across the fence and then they drove back to Cincinnati Cin-cinnati The doctor gave him 10 for the job Trusty afterwards returned re-turned t his home in Urbana I1 where he told the story about this midnight mid-night drive to his father Witness identified certain letters on crossex amination one was to Pearl Bryans father from William T Trusty the father of witness stating that Trusty and son were related to the detective and could solve the mystery of the Pearl Bryan murder Mr Hayes Mrs Bryans attorney afterward received letters from Trusty soliciting employment employ-ment for himself and telling him the defense would prove that Pearl Bryan died in Cincinnati and that he and his son and their cousin who is a detective detec-tive could thwart this evidence The crossexamination also showed that their cousin was John Seward who ha had considerable experience in working up testimony IT WAS RIGID The witness William Trusty was kept on the stand much of the afternoon un der a furious crossexamination He said his father was a third cousin to John Seward or Svard as he sometimes spells his name He identified spels Identfed a photograph pho-tograph of John Seward as the same person a an engraving of a pamphlet in the hands of the prosecution which pamphlet was entitled the confession of John Seward of his complicity in a murder in Casey county Kentucky I I also developed in the testimony of this witness that John Seward served one term in the Kentucky penitentiary Furthermore Fur-thermore It transpired that John Seward Se-ward had visited Urbana I in February Febru-ary and had talked with witness Wil lipm B Trusty and his father William Trusty about this murder Furthermore letters were shown from William Trusty sr to Mr A Bryan and to Bryans attorney at-torney Mr Hayes in February offering for a sure consideration to thwart the defense in its purpose to secure evidence to prove Pearl Bryan died in Cincinnati and was taken to Kentucky and beheaded be-headed I was also shown that John Seward had coached the witness George Dayton who made a complete flunk on the stand this afternoon They produced written directions prepared by Seward and given to Dayton to testify to He failed to deliver the goods when the time came The prosecution anticipated this testimony of witnesses produced by Seward and have counter witnesses here Tomorrow and Wednesday will be field days Depositions from the dental college col-lege consumed the rest of the afternoon |
