Show THE SLAYER OF THE LATE SHAH I I He isaFolIower of a Well Known 1 Agitator HIS > MIND UNBALANCED ASSASSINATION THE OUTCOME OF A I CONSPIRACY Murderer Admits That He Intended to Commit Suicide hy Blowing Out His Brain but Was Disarmed Before Be-fore He Could Carry Out His Intentions In-tentions Waited Two Months for a Favorable Chance TEHERAN May 4Copyright Associated Asso-ciated Press 1896It has been definitely defin-itely ascertained that the assassin of the late shah of Persia Nazer Ed Din is Mollah Reza a follower of the well known agitator Sheikh Jem Alendin exiled ex-iled in 1891 after having been convicted of high treason Reza was also imprisoned impris-oned for treason but subsequently was liberated After his release he continued I his attacks upon the government was again imprisoned and once more released II re-leased and was actually granted a pension pen-sion by the shah In spite of the clemency clem-ency shown him Reza continued his agitation agi-tation against the government and when warned that he again would be arrested suddenly left this city He was next i heard of at Constantinople Instructions I were telegraphed to that city to have the Persian AGITATOR CLOSELY WATCHED Additional reports from Constantinople advised the government that Reza was i corresponding with Sheikh Jem AledSn There the plans for the assassination of the shah are believed to have been laid About two months ago Reza quietly left Constantinople and for some time all trace of him was lost Recently his presence here has been known to the police po-lice authorities and they are blamed for I not having caused his arrest They excuse ex-cuse themselves on the ground that the late shahs clemency to the assassin was exercised under the belief founded on the reports of the physicians that Reza was of unsound mind and it was their belief that even i taken w custody I once more he would only have been I again released by the shahs orders Since his arrest for the murder of the shah Reza has been closely questioned by the judicial authorities At first he professed to have acted entirely of his own accord and in the interest of his people to whom he claimed reforms to which they were justly entitled had been refused Later the prisoner confessed that the assassination of the Shah was the outcome come of ofA A PLAN OF CONSPIRACY He was chosen to do the deed He waited two months for a favorable I chance to shoot the shah The assassin also admitted that upon many occasions I he succeeded in approaching the late shah under various disguises but i was not until Friday last In the mosque of the Shah Abdul Azim that he was near enough to fire the fatal shot The murderer mur-derer has admitted that eight persons were in the conspiracy Two have been arrested and are prisoners at Nieces They were domestics employed in the harem of the shah Reza has confessed that the girls kept the conspirators informed in-formed regarding the movements of the shah On Friday morning the chosen assassin as-sassin was informed that the shah intended in-tended to visit the shrine of the sultan Abdul Azim Reza has finally Informed the authorities that he intended to commit com-mit suicide by blowing out his brains but was disarmed before he could carryout carry-out his intentions The enthronement of the new shah Muzaffer ed Din at Tabriz on Saturday was accomplished without any disorder dis-order being recorded and his majesty started soon afterwards for the city to attend the funeral Of his father whose bodv has been embalmed and will be interred at Koom The new shah has also been proclaimed pro-claimed by the chief priest by order of the grand vizier who has guaranteed to maintain order vending the arrival of his majesty Telegrams announcing the allegiance alleg-iance of the governors princes ministers min-isters and officials are being received from all parts of the country The new shahs elder brother Mas soud Mirza governor of Ispahan was ONE OF THE FIRST to profess allegiance to the new shah No ground has been found for the report re-port that Massoud Mirza was in anyway any-way connected with the fatal conspiracy con-spiracy He sent a second telegram of congratulation to the shah upon being notified that he is confirmed a governor gov-ernor of Ispahan The grand vizier has also been confirmed con-firmed and with the exception of some disturbances upon the part of the troops at Shiraz who asked for their arrears of pay there has been no disorder dis-order and none is apprehended The prisoner later made a further confession admitting that conspirators had also planned to murder the grand vizier I is also believed that the plot was much more widespread than Reza now admits and that some time must elapse public before all the facts are made |
