Show SOMETHING MAY DROP A NEWLY PROJECTED MOVE BY THE AXTISUFFRAGISTS Efforts Will Be Made to Put Through an Amendment for n Separate Article AVliere Is GootVrrin Atf Before many days have gone by something is likely to drop in the constitutional con-stitutional convention If a well defined I t de-fined plan is carried out the opponents of equal suffrage1 who have so far I been led by Roberts will present another I other amendment to the section now under consideration proposing that j suffrage shall not be placed in the constitution itself but that it be submitted sub-mitted by separate article This form of amendment has it is said already been decided upon The opponents of suffrage make the claim with great aplomb that the best and safest thing to do will be to submit sub-mit a separate article and indulged in a deal of talk yesterday to the effect that if the vote could be delayed another an-other week there would be poured in the convention a veritable flood of remonstrances against having the provision pro-vision embodied in the constitution That a strong effort will be made to I have the proposition put In the form I of a separate article is certain from the efforts made by certain delegates yesterday and the declarations of Morris and others that they fear equal suffrage will never become a reality unless the convention places it in the constitution was worked for all it is worth This element is fairly lionizing Roberts and while the majority in favor of suffrage is so great that there is little to fear from their efforts still forewarned is forearmed In the event that the plan is carried out and the separate article is submitted sub-mitted it will be interesting to watch the movements of the Salt Lake delegates dele-gates According to the ruling of W F James chairman of the county committee com-mittee the obligation of the Republicans Republi-cans extends no farther than the support sup-port of such a proposition Will his interpretation be accepted and the weakkneed ones like Varian and Van Home who oppose it on principle but say they consider themselves pledged stampede for this proposition and declare de-clare to an anxious world that their consciences are clear Or will they still vote for the present section But more than all where will Delegate Dele-gate Goodwin take his stand His case is very hard the way it is He has declared emphatically that he is not bound by any caucus or platform He has declared with more emphasis that he is opposed to equal suffrage on general principles In a minor key he has said he will vote for suffrage That position is certainly unique to say the least But what if he is subjected to the necessity of choosing between the separate article or the inseparable in-separable one Will he stick to the latter Will he be more consistent with his own expressions and vote for the former Or will he dodge I |
