Show A BURNING MOUNTAIN 1 Paris Tex March 31A party of men who arrived here today bring I I news of a most singular phenomenon recently discovered in the wildest part of the Choctaw nation The Nanawoyd j mountain is about fifteen miles long i and towers fully 1000 feet above the j surrounding country It is in a deso I jate position no person living within fifteen miles of it Prospectors saw I smoke arising from the mountain and on investigating they found that smoke I was issuing from a fissure in the rock I The rock was so hot they could not stand on it while a strong odor of sulphur pervaded the atmosphere and occasional detonations were heard I The party became alarmed and left the vicinity They went to an old Indian and informed him of their discovery I He was familiar wth the place and said that the smoke had been issuing i from It and the same noises had been heard since 832 when the Choctaws Ii went to that country A further Investigation In-vestigation will be made as veins of i silver have been found at the base of I the burning mountain I I |
