Clarence T Brorvns Lecture at the First Congregational Congrega-tional Church Milton the Puritan Puri-tan Poet The Services at the Tabernacle Yesterday Afternoon The Crucifixion Stainers cantata supplanted the regular service at St Pauls last evening Standing room in the pretty little chapel was scarcely available even ladies could not find seats Deep interest was manifested in the rendition which was of an order entitled en-titled to commendation The cantata is a musical meditation interspersed with supplicative and adorative hymns of the closing scenes of the life of Christ beginning alt the entrance to Gethsemane and closing with the expiation on the cross The recitative portions selections from the evangelical histories evangelcal were ably presented while the work of the chorus was especially fine The quartette God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son etc was led by Ir Lizzie ThomasEdward and created a profound pro-found impression Equally interesting and impressive was the recitative from the Malefactors scene by tenor bass and chorus All characters represented repre-sented were male but the entire chorus was made up of the following ladies and gentlemen Sopranos Mrs Lizzie ThomasEdward Misses Gagget Dash ley Lees Meeks Webber contraltos Mrs Hampton Misses Gatrell and Lees tenors Messrs Thomas Burley Whiteman Meeks bassas Miles Schied Berry and Durst Professor J K Sullivan acted as organist and choir master I The Blue Cross Ceylon Teas are I packed in airtight packets to preserve adulteration their peculiar fragrance and prevent First Methodist Rev Mabry preached yesterday on Christian duty He compared the Christian through Paul to the contestants con-testants in the Olympic games He fid Christians should make the race tor salvation the one duty They should bend every energy toward reaching the goal living to that end like the athletes of old He said the Christian duty was individual Too often children lean on their parents wives on their husbands and hus bands on their wives until the wife is sometimes the bigger man of the two While it was good to reach out and help others still each person must see to his own salvation He referred to woman suffrage and said he did not knoT whether it would cultivate this individuality or not He thought Christians should forget the mistakes and sins of the past in reaching out for the mark which is at the end of the course over which Christians run Unlike the Olympic games in this race one is not trying to defeat his brother All may win and be exalted forever First Congregational Church The eigWth of the series of lectures being delivered at the Congregational church was given last evening by Rev C T Brown The subject was Milton the Pun tan poet Cromwell and Milton were alike in breadth and grasp of intellect and fiery force of will power Cromwell Crom-well was superior in Oils field as Milton Mil-ton was superior In the poetic genius which caught the very spirit of Puritanism Puri-tanism and wedded i to immortal verse He who thoroughly knows these two great men must know the nature and work of Puritanism in the seventeenth century Milton was the child of the reformation and of Ithe rennaissance His rennaisance bqyhood and early home are typical of the earlier Puritanism Puri-tanism which had in i much of the beauty culture and joyousness of the Elizabethan age The best of the Puritans Puri-tans were very far from being gloomy ascetics When Milton at the age of I twentynine made the tour of Italy he was the most impressive young man who ever left the shores of England Beautiful beyond praise the best read man of his time and giving promise of the greatest literary achievements When after a few months spent in Italy the storm began to rise in England Eng-land he like a true Puritan sacrificing sacrific-ing his great literary ambition returned re-turned ito England ready to do any service in the cause of freedom He sacnfied the twenty best years of his life in devotion to the cause of civil and religious liberty The prose of these years is among the noblest specimens of English language Now and then the gnarled sticks of controversy contro-versy turn to golden arrows of Phoe bus in his trembling hands singing as they fly and carrying their messages of doom in music At the restoration of Charles I Milton was old blind and poor but invincibly great There is no nobler no-bler illustration of the vitality and gigantic gi-gantic tenacity of Puritanism than the way in which this broken man took up the purpose of his youth and gloriously achieved his early literary ambition and gave to the world the English epic Paradise Lost The subject of the next lecture will be The Mayflower contract or Puritanism Puri-tanism in America The people of Russia used to take all the choicest China tea but are now giving preference to the Blue Cross Ceylon Teas Unitarian Church Unity Hall 41 Main street was the scene of a fine gathering yesterday morning In Unity Hall the Unitarians have selected a place which is central I ly situated besides being commodious and pleasant inside The laillss of the I Unitarian society woo are always busy have on hand a fcallai concErtI concErt-I to take place quite soon I is quite evident that the Unitarian society is filling a real need In Salt Lake I city Its portals are so broad that what you believe is not asked I is 1 taken for granted that you are liberal in thought and action else you would I not affiliate with those who are The I subject of yesterday mornings address I was What Shall we Teach the Young or Religion and the Rising Generation Gen-eration After the attractive senyice had been gone through and a brilliantly liantly rendered solo entitled The Star of Bethlehem had been sung by Miss Harmione Pratt the Rev Stanley M Hunter said that there was no need to make the mossbacked statement that the topic of the morning was an important one The religious education educa-tion of the young could not fail to be I of real concern to all right minded people peo-ple Th old idea of a religious education educa-tion was to cram the child with a lot of wild and Impossible dogmas He could wish that this was really a thing of the past but alas The conventional convention-al Ideas of creedal theology of heaven and hell satan and salvation liad worked sad havoc on the plastic mind of children Mr Hunter characterised all this as the igneous theology avery a-very appropriate term On the subject or the Bible he said that many pa rents growing disgusted with the cant I of the churches lad kept the Bible away from their children This was a I mistake While he did not think such deprivation a religious loss he did think I was a decided literary loss Art poetry music and even history were so intertwined with the ancient Hebrew and other writings called the Bible that one could hardly be called well informed unless somewhat acquainted ac-quainted with their contents The best means to this end was to put paraphrases phrases as published by the Unitarian Sunday School society of Boston into the hands of our children lIi Hunter said that ethics and not religion should be taught Religion would take care of itself if he best sayings of Jesus Confucius Buddha Zoroaster and Mahommed were inculcated I incul-cated No one has the right to handicap handi-cap the mind of a child with any relig ious dogma whatever Liberal relig ious Sunday schools endeavor to carry this out to the letter I I The refreshed feeling after drinking Blue Cross Ceylon Tea is due to the theine a natural stimulant At the Tabernacle The regular Sunday afternoon services ser-vices were held in the tabernacle yesterday yes-terday President of the Stake Angus 11 Cannon presiding The services were commenced by the choir singing the hymn Great God attend while Zion sings The joy that from thy presence sprin sPryer s-Pryer was offered by Elder W H Folsom The choir sang the hymn Come dearest Lord descend and dwell By faith and love in even heart I Elder George Teasdale of the I quorum of the twelve apostles was I the first to address the congregation I The speaker quoted from the writings of the Apostle James where it is said I any man lack wisdom let him ask of God who giveth liberally to all and upbraideth none Just so the elders of this church say when they cal upon the world to accept the gospel gos-pel When the Lord Jesus sent his disciples out he used very similar language to that used in the instructions instruc-tions to the elders in our day Men of the world put peculiar interpretations on the Bible that is their own ideas and inclinations govern them in their interpretation But with us we should ask ourselves the questions Do I think for myself Have I the knowledge of the gospel Have I the knowledge of God whom to know Is eternal life Individually we come into the world make our own character charac-ter and record As each Is responsible responsi-ble for his own acts he should ask himself Do I believe there is a God Do I believe there is a father in heaven and that we are here in a state of probation with good and evil before us to choose between the pleasures of sin and the path of righteousness right-eousness wherein we make our way sure t a glorious resurrection We cannot justify ourselves by saying say-ing we followed a set of men who did our thinking for u The Savior said to his disciples Go ye unto all the world and preach the gospel gos-pel to every creature and these signs shall follow those that believe Does this not come to every individual Do we not manifest that we are individuals by believing and receiving re-ceiving it or disbelieving and rejecting i Some argue that it is only necessary neces-sary to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved This is a very popular doctrine save if they I believe on Him they will believe the I gospel and do His works What is the object the desire of the gospel You will say to redeem us from death As in Adam all die so in Jesus Christ I shall all be made alive What is the redemption We are all subject to death which is the separation of the body and the spirit In the beginning Adam and Eve were in a glorious place not subject to death Everything was conducive to happiness They were t eat of every I thing save one tree There was plenty without i The adversary besought but unsuccessfully of Adam to eat and he would not die Eve fave way and the adversary captivated them They had become the servants > of > sin and when the time came death came and I also came to their posterity Little children come here Innocent but want their own way Death would separate body and soul and leave us in hell Christ offers us a way to redeem ourselves our-selves from that hell That way is to believe His doctrine We are required I to repent of everything that Is wrong i and leave i cease to do evil and learn I to do good That we should be bap i tised by immersion for the remission of our sins That we should receive the Holy Ghost Holy men of old i wrote and spoke as they were moved I by the Holy Ghost There Is the key to the scriptures open them and we have the interpretation All men must repent be born of water and receive the Holy Ghost That will lead us into in-to all righteousness That is the only way for the redemption from death After it comes a proper education and we can then learn of God I is nonsense non-sense to say works are not necessary If we believe the words we will obey them themI there are any here under the dominion do-minion of darkness it is to their interest inter-est to think of these things and think for themselves In over for 1 years experience In the work I have seen the signs follow the believer and know that God has spokn and revealed Himself Him-self unto His prophet Joseph Gmith The Bible is sent all over the earth In the second chapter of the Acts of the Apostles the first gospel sermon was preached The operation of the spirit of truth and the testimony borne by the apostles caused those under the teaching to cry Men and brethren what shall we do Peter said Repent Re-pent and be baptised every one of you That was the testimony of the president of the church that they might be redeemed from sin and death and be taught of God He is the only one who can teach us aright If we can believe there is a Christ and that there is something after death we would npt steal lie commit adultery or any other sin Do we want to he redeemed back into the presence f our Father Do we want to be prepare1 for Christ and His second coming Do we not want a part in the first glorious resurrection I we dont we are very silly and very unkind to ourselves The only way to be kind to ourselves is to obey the commandments of God I there are any strangers here I would say to them search these things think and learn for yourselves your-selves You se the labors of this people gathered from the north nort south east and west and when you see a man who is a Latterday Saint you see one who is honest truthful and Godfearing Elder Teasdale closed by desiring the Lords blessings to rest upon all that I they might understand these things and do them and receive an exaltation in the kingdom of our farther Elder Charles W Penrose was the next speaker He said those who obey this gospel obtain peace and happiness in this world and life everlasting in the worldto come and this is without saying anything against the various sects For there is truth and error In all The Latterday Saints say they are no better than other people They say i Is an Infallible religion received I by fallible men All men are made of the same material and liable to err er This system is truth and truth is infallible in-fallible These principles are received from God and not taught by the wisdom wis-dom of man but by the spirit of truth We have perfect religion direct from God our father While we use the Bible In testimony our knowledge has come down pure and fresh direct from the father The sects of the Christian world are institutions of men carried on by the wisdom learning and efforts of men That is why they dont regard our faith as Christian But everything we have has come through Christ from our father and i Is not the church of Joseph Smith Brigham Young or any man but this church is the church of Christ with the same gifts powers and authority and our name is Latter day Saints as theirs were the form er day saints This authority has come from Peter James and John and we have a living testimony But we take no credit for this work God has done it I has not been done by our own wisdom but by the mercy of God And when the time comes that every knee shall bow we will have to give him the glory We are called out of the world to be his people and to bear testimony to the world of the truth and to warn them Every one who is warned i called upon up-on to warn his neighbor as the word Is to the whole world to repent and turn from their iniquties unto him If we do repent and are baptised we will receive the holy ghost and will then I know that our feet are upon the rock The time will come when all people that have breathed the breath of life will hear of the one way of receiving re-ceiving the truth and will bow the knee That spirit will not only give peace and happiness here but glory in the life to come Those who will not receive i and prefer to be filthy still will be banished from the presence of the Father All the sects have some truth in them and a heathen who bows down to worship sincerely is acceptable accept-able but all have gone astray and there is none righteous Our Father I and his son and men who had ithat authority au-thority in former days have brought i to this church Elder Penrose close by referring to the thousands who have received the truth and been gathered to Zion and bore his testimony to the principles taught by the Saints and called upon all who have not done so to receive the truth and prepare the way to receive an exaltation in the mansions above Elder Angus 11 Cannon presiding announced that a grand concert would be given in the tabernacle by the choir on Saturday evening April 6th Part of the funds will be used for books And as part will be used to alleviate the distress caused by the sad caJtas trophe at Evanston recently it was expected that the building would be filled The choir sang the anthem Lot the Mountains Shout for Joy and the congregation joined in singing the doxology dox-ology I Benediction was pronounced by Patriarch Pa-triarCh John Smith |
