Show CHURCH jioiiiEs WORRY HIM BISHOP CLARK ANNOYED BY BRIGGS MATTER Funston Affair of Boise Idaho Also Creates Dissatisfaction May Be Referred to House of Bishops I New York May 16A special to the Tribune from Providence R L says that the RU Rev Thomas Clark the i venerable presiding bishop of the I American house of bishops has been I much annoyed by the controversy over the Briggs matter which he considers most unfortunate I has brought him I a vat amount of correspondence and many telegrams in regard to the matter mat-ter over which he thinks he has no control The bishop said that he did I not see what action he could take if he was desirous of taking any The ordination I ordi-nation of a priest was entirely a matter mat-ter of local control There was a set I method of procedure and if i was carried car-ried out and the candidate for orders orers commended by the standing committee the bishop of the diocese had no recourse re-course except to ordain the candidate I He thought that Bishop Potter in this case had exercised wise discretion and judgment and that his letter leter explaining explain-ing his course was a very clear and convincing document Bishop Clark has also been much disturbed dis-turbed over the Funston matter The Rev J B Funston of Portsmouth Va was to have been consecrated bishop of the diocese of Boise Id but owing to the protest of eleven bishops the order for consecration has been canceled can-celed A special meeting of the house of bishops has been called to meet in St Louis in October for the election ton of a bishop for Japan The Funston matter may be referred to that convention con-vention also by the presiding bishop for action No other business can come up except that for which the convention conven-tion Is called which would prevent action ac-tion by the house of blshop should such action be contemplated In answer to an inquiry a to his views of the modern tendency of clergymen cler-gymen of other denominations who get into trouble with their churches fleeing flee-ing l to the Episcopal church for refuge Bishop Clark said The Episcopal church is very roomy I contains men from most clvergent views on many subjects As long asa as-a man is able subscribe to the creeds and Is morally impeachable he is generally gen-erally acceptable and some of the men who have thus fa come from other denominations have proved to be very valuable Episcopalian clergymen Episcpalan cer men r |
