Show I NO WORD FROM BROOKE War Department Sees No Cause For Alarm Washington May 16 General Brooke has net reported to the war department de-partment any serious situation hi Cuba I and it is not believed at the department I that any alan need be felt regarding the condition of affairs No advice is I given General Brooke a It has been the policy of the president to clothe the I officers in command in the Islands with plenary powers to deal with situations as they arise and hold such officers re SDOnsible I The confidence of the war department In General Brooke was strengthened by I I the visit of Secretary Alger to Cuba What had been done and what was g I Ing forward seemed to Secretary Alger for the best interests of all the people I of the Island I has been the policy of General Brooke to deal mildly with the Cubans and avoid any action which would tend to irritate but to be I firm when it is necessary and the disturbers dis-turbers will be made to understand that no overt acts will be permitted I Communications that General Brooke has made to the war department ha dearent regarding i re-garding the situation are not given to the public but the officials understand II the source of the present trouble Is that the generals of the Cuban army are disappointed becaue they are not I likely to realize as much out of the money appropriated for the appropriate army as they think they should These generals gener-als all believed they would secure a portion of the money equal to their rank and their own estimate of their services The whole trouble regarding the payment pay-ment of the money and the delay may be traced directly to these officers who as members of the assembly or as supporters of Gomez have constantly con-stantly raised obstacles in the way ota ot-a peaceful disarmament of the Cubans and the settlement of the affairs of the Island One thing Is assured beyond all other considerations The United States will remain fo the present In absolute control con-trol of the island and the orders of the officers In command will be sustained by the government at Washington |
