cover outstanding accounts ac-counts with symptoms of distress Prices were marked up in the last half hour of the trading In a way which showed plainly plain-ly the eagerness of the short to close out their contracts so that they were bidding prices up themselves in many cases No more complete reversal of speculative sentiment timent could be Imagined and the weeks earlier losses were wiped out In all but a few cases and the general level of prices brought back to about those of last Saturday Sat-urday Bears did not yield the field without with-out a struggle the opening of the market e showing declines In I Pin number of stocks which have been favorite targets for the bears In the recent market Sugar was rained Gown a point and Brooklyn Transit Manhattan and a number of the steel stocks were under pressure while the opening op-ening gain In Metropolitan Street Railway was aimost wiped out But the strength in the railroad lst especially es-pecially the International stocks in sympathy sym-pathy with the earlier rise in London and on buying for London account checked it k the I earlier effort to force a decline Metropolitan Me-tropolitan Street Railway Sugar and Brooklyn Transit all developed quite a bouyant tendency and the bears drew off their forces and awaited developments By the time the buying for London account ac-count had been executed the market b came dull and the bears returned to the attack They produced some Impression I on the Tobacco stocks American Malting and Rubber and Minneapolis and St Paul and Sault Ste Marie but admost no effect on the general list A twow > int decline j after midday in Sugar was the only evidence evi-dence of any weak spot of the market and the stubborn resistance of prices induced In-duced the bears to abandon their campaign cam-paign and to rush prices up In the final iag In their panicstricken efforts to cover Net gains throughout the list ranged from 1 to over 4 points and are I ever vn nnlnts for the maloritv of active stocks The announcement made after business hours yesterday of the engagement of 00 gold for export came as a sur exprt prise and was greeted hopefully by the bears But the operations served to relieve re-lieve London money and thus awaken a buying movement In the tock market there which spread to the American se tlon and was reflected back upon the New ton York exchange This renewed strength was equally Ineffective in depressing prices of stocks as the reported failure of Russian crops was expected to bring out large reserves of American wheat In the outside market thee was a very strong recovery In the stock of the Amalgamated reover gamated Copper company which touched 95 This was accepted as a resumption of aggressive support from the tactics by the powerful Interests behind that combination combi-nation Good reports in the anthracite trade and the expectation of a favorable bank statement by reason of contraction bnk of loans all contributed to the upturn In prices There were yielding points In the bond list but prices of many Issues turned upwards lst prces wards Total sales par value J2000OuO U S Ss registered advanced J4 and U S 3s coupon In the bid
