Show MORt DETAILS OP HE 1 CANAL CONSTRUCTION OF WATERWAY ACROSS TH ISTHMUS Shipo Passing Through Will Have to Enter Ten LocksDepth of Canal to be Thirty Feet New York June 2A special to the Herald from Washington says Additional details have been received In regard to the route recommended by the Nicaraguan canal commission for the proposed isthmian waterway While the route outlined I in I the synop let f Yj t I I sis of the commissions report just made public by the state department I Is prepared by the commission it Is understood that the body submits several sev-eral variants which may be adopted by the construction engineer i he deems it proper to do so The commission Is agreed that the route from Brito to the San Juanlllo river should be as set forth but states that there are two ways of connecting the canal at this point with the Caribbean Carib-bean sea the first across the low coun ban 1rt try to Greytown and connecting by a straight line with the canal at San Juanillo to the Caribbean sea where a new harbor will have to b built The commission finds there will be little lit-tle difference in the cost of the sev te oral variants s that It will b a matter mat-ter of choice with the construction engineers en-gineers as to which route shall be adopted The single dam which the preferred route contemplates will be located at Boca San Carlos just above Ochoa and above the mouth of the San Carlos This point was selected as the site of I the dam because the commission states the constructor will be able to avert the heavy flow of water which empties into the San Juan river from the San Carlos just below that point The commission com-mission also submits an alternative proposition for the building of three dams one at Boca San Carlos and midway mid-way that point and Machuca rapids and the third at Machuca rapids The dams in case of construction will be eighteen feet In height There will be ten locks In the canal four on the west side and the remainder remain-der on the eastern station between Boca San Carlos and the Atlantic Each lock will be eighty feet wide From Boca San Carlos to San Juan del Norte the canal will be 150 feet In width from Boca San Carlos t Fort San Carlos tne lake outlet of the canal It will be 300 feet in width The canal Increases in width from Fort San CaIrns to Just opposite the Solentiname Islands where I is COQ feet In width and It tflll maintain this width until it reaches Las la Jas yhere it decreases to 150 feet and r alas at that vidth throughout the r ainder of Us length The depth oft oughout of-t canal estimated upon Is thirty feet |
