Show ADIBASSADORrO ENGLAND I I Governor Wolcott Recommended and Henry Adams entioned I New York Sept 27A dispatch to the Herald from Washington says I President McKinley is considering the recommendation of prominent public men of Massachusetts that Governor I Wolcott be appointed ambassador to I Great Britain Notwithstanding the I strong endorsements which the Mast sachusctts governor has it is not be t i lIeved In we11 informed circles that he will be tendered the position In any event the president does not propose to make a selection until the arrival here of Colonel Hay when the matter will te discussed and settled In view I of the presidents desire to consult with Colonel tRay it is believed in some I quarters that McKinley will be willIng to accept a suitable man who may be I recommended by the new secretary The name of Henry Adams a warm friend of Colonel Hay is mentioned in this connection Mr Adams is well known as a historian his-torian and writer While he has had no diplomatic experience it is recalled that his father Charles Francis Adams was minister to Great Britain durIng the rebellion his grandfather John Quincy Adams held the same position just before the war of 1812 and his great I grandfather John Adams was also credited to the British government as minister immediate after the revolution revolu-tion Mr Adams is a highly educated gentleman gen-tleman a ready speaker and would his friends believe creditably represent this government at the court of St James Representative Hitts name is only mentioned In circles outside of the White House and it is generally con ceded that he stands no chance for the appointment |
