Show TRIAL OF THE CHAPLAIN Witnesses Testify Concerning McIn tyres Lecture at Denver Denver Cob Sept 27The court nartial of Rev Joseph P McIntyre chaplain of the battleship Oregon on the charge of scandalizing the navy in a lecture delivered in Denver Aug 8 ias resumed at 10 oclock today As In the opening day the court room was crowded mamr being turned away IIr J M Burnett business manager of the Rocky Mountain News was the first witness called He identified the copy of the News containing a report 3r the offending lecture by Chaplain Mcintyre Frank E Carruthers business busi-ness manaser of the Denver Times was also called for a similar purpose Miss Minnie J Reynolds who reported report-ed the lecture for the News was called to verify the report published and from which extracts contained in the charges against Chaplain McIntyre were taken She fully corroborated the report she had written which was introduced as testimony Miss Reynolds testified that Chaplain McIntyres reference to Captain Cap-tain Roble D Evans as Fighting Bob was contemptuous in manner Crossexamination faile to shake her testimony that Chaplain McIntyre as rerted that Admiral Sampson reported himself within four miles of the Spanish Span-ish i ship Cristobol Colon when she surrendered sur-rendered in order that he migl1t secure his share of the prize money bnd that Sampson though no more entitled to Darticbate than were the members of his audience would receive 10000 while Captain Clark who fought the Oregon as an man ever feught ship before be-fore would receive but 500 1 She also testified that Challain Mcintyre declared that the contracts for all east era built battleshi1s were secured through tolitical pulls and hence the Oregon which was built in the west was the onllr one honestly built She maintained that the chaplain said that while the Oregon was going into the fight the Iowa was going to the rear and that she was kept there during the fight and said that he offered no explanation expla-nation of that alleged action Paul W Beck who reported the lee ture of Chaplain McIntyre for the Denver Den-ver Times was next called and corroborated I corrob-orated the testimony of 0 Miss Reynolds |
